  • Publication number: 20060277571
Abstract: A method for determining an intensity value of an interaction with a computer program is described. The method and device includes capturing an image of a capture zone, identifying an input object in the image, identifying an initial value of a parameter of the input object, capturing a second image of the capture zone, and identifying a second value of the parameter of the input object. The parameter identifies one or more of a shape, color, or brightness of the input object and is affected by human manipulation of the input object. The extent of change in the parameter is calculated, which is the difference between the second value and the first value. An activity input is provided to the computer program, the activity input including an intensity value representing the extent of change of the parameter. A method for detecting an intensity value from sound generating input objects, and a computer video game are also described.

  • Publication number: 20060252477
Abstract: A method and system for interactive interfacing with a computer gaming system is provided. The method includes providing an input device, where the input device is configured to convey mutlti-channel mixed input data that is to be interpreted by the computer gaming system. The method includes identifying an action to be performed by the computer gaming system, and the action is mapped to the mutlti-channel mixed input data provided by the input device. Then, a gearing is applied between the action to be performed by the computer gaming system and the mutlti-channel mixed input data received from the input device. The gearing scales an adjustment to impact the action to be performed by the computer gaming system. The gearing can be set dynamically by the game, by the user, or can be preset by software or user configured in accordance with a gearing algorithm.

  • Publication number: 20060252541
Abstract: Methods and systems for interactive interfacing with a computer gaming system are provided. The computer gaming system includes a video capture device for capturing image data. One method includes displaying an input device to the video capture device, where the input device has a plurality of lights that are modulated so as to convey positioning of the input device and communication data that is to be interpreted by the computer gaming system based on analysis of the captured image data and a state of the plurality of lights. This method also includes defining movement of an object of a computer game that is to be executed by the computer gaming system, such that the movement of the object may be mapped to movements in position of the input device as detected in the captured image data. The method then establishes a gearing between the movement of the object of the computer game verses the movements in position of the input device.

  • Publication number: 20060252474
Abstract: A method and system for enabling dynamic user interactivity between user actions and actions to be performed by a computer program is provided. The system includes a computing system and an acoustic detection analyzer that is coupled to or executed by the computing system. The system also includes an input device for interfacing with the computer program that is to be executed by the computing system. The input device has a gearing control for establishing a scaling between acoustic data produced at the input device and actions to be applied by the computer program as analyzed by the acoustic detection analyzer. The gearing can be set dynamically by the game, by the user, or can be preset by software or user configured in accordance with a gearing algorithm.

  • Publication number: 20060252475
Abstract: Methods and systems for interactive interfacing with a computer gaming system are provided. A method includes providing an input device, where the input device is configured to convey inertial data that is to be interpreted by the computer gaming system. The method then identifies an action to be performed by the computer gaming system, where the action is mapped to the inertial data provided by the input device. Then, the method applies a gearing between the action to be performed by the computer gaming system and the inertial data received from the input device. The gearing scales an adjustment to impact the action to be performed by the computer gaming system. The gearing can be set dynamically by the game, by the user, or can be preset by software or user configured in accordance with a gearing algorithm.

  • Publication number: 20060239471
Abstract: Sound processing methods and apparatus are provided. A sound capture unit is configured to identify one or more sound sources. The sound capture unit generates data capable of being analyzed to determine a listening zone at which to process sound to the substantial exclusion of sounds outside the listening zone. Sound captured and processed for the listening zone may be used for interactivity with the computer program. The listening zone may be adjusted based on the location of a sound source. One or more listening zones may be pre-calibrated. The apparatus may optionally include an image capture unit configured to capture one or more image frames. The listening zone may be adjusted based on the image. A video game unit may be controlled by generating inertial, optical and/or acoustic signals with a controller and tracking a position and/or orientation of the controller using the inertial, acoustic and/or optical signal.

  • Publication number: 20060233389
Abstract: Targeted sound detection methods and apparatus are disclosed. A microphone array has two or more microphones M0 . . . MM. Each microphone is coupled to a plurality of filters. The filters are configured to filter input signals corresponding to sounds detected by the microphones thereby generating a filtered output. One or more sets of filter parameters for the plurality of filters are pre-calibrated to determine one or more corresponding pre-calibrated listening zones. Each set of filter parameters is selected to detect portions of the input signals corresponding to sounds originating within a given listening zone and filter out sounds originating outside the given listening zone. A particular pre-calibrated listening zone is selected at a runtime by applying to the plurality of filters a set of filter coefficients corresponding to the particular pre-calibrated listening zone.

  • Publication number: 20060007386
Abstract: A free space tunable filter produces a passband output as a result of sequential processing by an array of narrowband tunable filters (NBTFs) each tuned to a slightly different frequency. The present invention is comprised of one or more stages having multiple interleaved sectors and comprising an array of NBTFs having a masked outer surface reflective coating. Stages cascading is used to increase the device figure of merit and single stages are partitioned into multiple sectors that process a specific interleaved region of the bandwidth. Final stage output group passband signals are combined in a multiplexer and tapped with a partially transparent photodetector.

  • Patent number: 6888979
Abstract: A microelectromechanical (MEMS) apparatus has a base and a flap with a portion coupled to the base so that the flap may move out of the plane of the base between first and second position. The base may have a cavity with largely vertical sidewalls that contact a portion of the flap when the flap is in the second position Electrodes may be placed on the vertical sidewalls and electrically isolated from the base to provide electrostatic clamping of the flap to the sidewall. The base may be made from a substrate portion of a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer and the flap defined from a device layer of the SOI wafer. The flap may be connected to the base by one or more flexures such as torsional beams. An array of one or more of such structures may be used to form an optical switch.
