  • Patent number: 5755016
Abstract: A fastener member useful for separable engagement with surface fibers of a low-loft, non-woven fabric, or the like, has a base web and a multitude of fastener elements formed with and extending from the base web. The fastener elements have a profile that comprises an elongated stem portion adjacent the base web and inclining at an acute angle to the base. A crook portion is formed on the end of the stem and is directed oppositely to the direction of inclination of the stem, being exposed for engaging a mating fastening member. The acute angle of the stem of the elements enables them to flex toward the base. Offset pairs of such elements can cooperatively move in a pincer-type motion to engage fibers and to retain engaged fibers. Other element configurations are disclosed. The fastener member has particular application for fastening of disposable products such as garments and diapers.

  • Patent number: 5692271
Abstract: An enhanced flexibility fastener product has a base and hook elements extending from the base. Rip-stops integrally molded with the base and with the hook elements are offset relative to the hook elements to reduce widthwise stiffness of the fastener product. The edge margins of the fastener are feathered in that they taper or otherwise reduce in thickness over an extended distance, preferably from at or near the hooks to the edge, resulting in a softer, less irritating fastener tape. Fasteners according to the invention are particularly advantageous on disposable absorbent garments such as diapers, sanitary napkins, and other articles of wear which come into contact with the user's skin.

  • Patent number: 5606781
Abstract: A separable fastener component for use with a complementary separable fastener component has a base member, having a nominal fastening face and a non-fastening face. Carried on the fastening face is a pattern of fastening elements, comprising a main region carrying fastening elements. Substantially surrounding the main region is a bald region that is substantially free of fastening elements; and substantially surrounding the bald region, is a perimeter region that carries fastening elements. The bald region may be a rectangular annulus, as may be the perimeter region of fastening elements. The bald and perimeter regions may also be non-rectangular. The sacrificial perimeter fastening elements may be hooks or loops. Anchoring elements may be provided on the non-fastening face of the base. Rather than the bald region being one that surrounds the main region, it may bound a portion of the main region and may be a pair of bald regions that are substantially free of fastening elements.

  • Patent number: 5315740
Abstract: A plastic molded hook for use with a hook and loop fastening system especially adapted for use with low profile loops. The hook design includes a base, a stem and a crook whereby the volume of the portion of the hook penetrating into a pile of loops is defined as the displacement volume. Hooks especially adapted for use with low profile loops have a displacement volume of less than 6.times.10.sup.-6 cubic inches.

  • Patent number: 5172980
Abstract: A reclosable bag has an open end which is closed by a closure strip which can be repeatedly reclosed. The closure strip preferably comprises a hook and loop fastener means which can be brought into engagement and a frangible section running lengthwise of the closure strip. The closure strip is adhesively sealed to the ends of the bag by adhesive sections on opposite sides of the frangible section. In one preferred embodiment of the invention, any opening force applied to the closure by the bag contents places the hook and loop fastener under shear stress only.

  • Patent number: 4984339
Abstract: An improved hook for hook and loop fasteners having a profile defined by an inner smoothly contoured generally concave face and an outer generally convex face, said hook comprising a sturdy base intimately engaging a substantially planar base member and extending therefrom to join a resilient hook portion, able to engage a loop applying a force to the hook portion substantially normal to the base member, terminating in a free end, wherein the hook tapers smoothly and continuously downwardly in width from the sturdy base member to the free end such that a loop engaging the hook in tension, with the applied force being substantially normal to the base member, will deform the hook portion resiliently under the applied force to release the loop at a desired applied force and such that a loop engaging the hook in shear, with the applied force substantially parallel to the base member, will engage the sturdy base member, the sturdy base member being sufficiently sturdy that it will not deform to release a loop enga

  • Patent number: 4955981
Abstract: A tamperproof, resealable bag of the type used to sell and store materials such as dog food, and the like. A unique sealing strip of the hook and loop fastening variety is employed therein. The bag is a flexible, frangible material such as paper and includes a flap extending from the rear edge over the front edge and down along the front piece. A strip of adhesive is disposed along the bottom edge of the flap to secure it to the front piece. A piece of cording is disposed between the flap and the front piece adjacent the top of the adhesive strip with an end extending outward therefrom for gripping. The two strips comprising the hook and loop fastening system are disposed between the flap and the front piece above and adjacent to the cording with one of the strips adhesively attached to the flap and the other to the front piece of the bag.

  • Patent number: 4884323
Abstract: A touch fastener mounting system having a touch fastener component attached to a member and adapted to releasably engage a mating touch fastener component. The touch fastener mounting system having a touch fastener component comprising a planar backing material carrying engaging elements on one surface thereof, the other surface of the backing material is connected to the member so that the member is isolated from the backing material whereby, upon separation of the engaged touch fastener components, the amount of noise-producing energy transmitted from the backing material to the member is decreased thereby reducing the amount of noise produced by the member. In a second embodiment, the noise producing energy is transmitted to the member and dampened by a high mass material attached to a rear surface of the member.

  • Patent number: 4662037
Abstract: An apparatus for ultrasonically providing selvedge on separable fasteners of the hook and loop-type. Portions of the separable fastener member are ultrasonically softened or melted and pressed toward the surface of the base member so as to be combined, or in some instances, consolidated therewith. The portions may be given a textured appearance by use of a textured anvil having either a simulated selvedge surface or even a trademark or logo impressed, machined or etched thereon. The tape may be provided with several selvedge portions and then slit medially of the portions to provide at least two separable fasteners of smaller width from a separable fastener of wider width.
