  • Patent number: 6268851
Abstract: The present invention comprises a novel system for authoring and publishing hypermedia works. The present invention includes a scrollable contents map window in which a graphical representation of a hypermedia work is displayed. The contents map window contains graphical lexia symbols representing the lexia of the hypermedia work, empty space, and other graphical and text elements. Links between lexia are not ordinarily displayed. Selecting a lexia symbol causes the corresponding lexia to be displayed in a lexia display window. The lexia symbols representing lexia may be arranged in the window in any configuration. Freely movable text labels and other graphical elements may be placed anywhere in the contents map window. Additional special purpose graphical elements may be placed in the contents map window to create relationships among lexia. In one embodiment, a number of different modes of the contents map window can be displayed. One mode is a caricature mode.

  • Patent number: 5419835
Abstract: A method of partitioning a pre-selected phase of a sample of liquid having a plurality of phases of differing densities, a separation device and a tube containing the separation device. The sample of liquid is placed in a first chamber of a linear tube that is separated from a second chamber by a separation device. The separation device slidably engages the interior surface of the tube in an essentially fluid-tight manner and has an axial orifice on the longitudinal axis of the tube that is in fluid flow communication with a flow-restriction channel. The phases are ordered concentrically by rotating the tube around its longitudinal axis e.g. in an axial centrifuge. The volume of the first chamber is reduced by movement of the separation device within the tube, that phase of the liquid located axially within the first chamber flowing into the axial orifice and passing through the flow-restriction channel into the second chamber.

  • Patent number: 5097882
Abstract: A tread (10) for a tire has at least three wide grooves (13,14,15,16) therein. At least two zigzag ribs (19,20,21) are bordered by said grooves and have block elements (22) nested in the reentrant angles of the ribs and separated therefrom by narrow grooves (23). The wide grooves (13,14,15,16) well remain open in a footprint of a tire while the narrow grooves (23) will close up in a footprint of a tire. Tire treads according to the invention may be provided as precured retread material, as part of a newly manufactured tire, or as part of a retreaded tire.

  • Patent number: 4447415
Abstract: Blood platelet concentrate in a plasma-free medium. Method for storage of blood platelets in a plasma-free medium which comprises centrifuging plasma to obtain a platelet pellet, removing the supernatant plasma, and resuspending the platelet pellet in a balanced salt medium. The balanced salt medium is an isotonic solution and may be selected from well known physiologically tolerable salt mediums. Additives to enhance platelet storage can be added to the salt medium.

  • Patent number: 4226075
Abstract: An apparatus for picking fruit from trees which takes the form of an elongated member which has a cutting blade arrangement at the upper end of the member and a handle structure at the lower end of the member for activating the cutting blade. Once the stem of the fruit has been severed, the fruit passes into a guide tube and hence into a flexible guide chute prior to being deposited into a container. The cutting blade assembly could take the form of a scissors type arrangement or could take the form of a rotating cylinder which passes over a fixed cutting blade with the fruit having been initially located within the cylinder.

  • Patent number: 4093843
Abstract: An electron beam welding machine incorporating a surface seal system which continuously seals the weld chamber located in an indexing table while such chamber is indexed beneath a seal plate carrying the surface seal material. As a result of the pressure differential involved, the seal surface also acts as a bearing surface as the wear plate on the indexing table moves in contact with the seal surface.

  • Patent number: 4092796
Abstract: A fishing hook is formed of a shank having a hook terminating at one end thereof and a fishing line coupler terminating at the other end of the shank. The fishing line coupler includes a wire bent upon itself to define a leading stretch of arcuate contour, an inner side follower stretch integrally connected at one end to the shank and at the other end to one end of the leading stretch, and an outer side follower stretch integrally connected at one end to the other end of the leading stretch and terminating at a free end. An aperture is formed in the leading stretch for enabling a leader to pass therethrough with the knot of the leader lodging on the adjacent surfaces of said inner side follower stretch and the outer side follower stretch.
