  • Patent number: 10734638
Abstract: An immobilized selenium body, made from carbon and selenium and optionally sulfur, makes selenium more stable, requiring a higher temperature or an increase in kinetic energy for selenium to escape from the immobilized selenium body and enter a gas system, as compared to selenium alone. Immobilized selenium localized in a carbon skeleton can be utilized in a rechargeable battery. Immobilization of the selenium can impart compression stress on both the carbon skeleton and the selenium. Such compression stress enhances the electrical conductivity in the carbon skeleton and among the selenium particles and creates an interface for electrons to be delivered and or harvested in use of the battery. A rechargeable battery made from immobilized selenium can be charged or discharged at a faster rate over conventional batteries and can demonstrate excellent cycling stability.

  • Publication number: 20200070665
Abstract: A charging station including a “reservoir” energy supply is proposed. The reservoir supply is formed of one or more rapid charge/discharge batteries that are also able to hold their charge for an extended period of time (as compared to conventional supercapacitors, for example). The reservoir supply is contemplated to accommodate transient increases in power demand when a given charging station has to re-charge several vehicles (for example) at the same time. The rechargeable batteries forming the reservoir are advantageously configured to thereafter be re-charged at a fast rate as well, making them ideal candidates for re-charging from secondary sources (such as, but not limited to, solar, fuel cells, wind, and the like).

  • Publication number: 20190181830
Abstract: An acoustic resonator includes a piezoelectric stack including a piezoelectric layer having a top surface and a bottom surface, a top electrode layer disposed above the top surface, and a bottom electrode layer disposed below the bottom surface. A number of acoustic wave reflectors are disposed on a side of the bottom electrode layer opposite the piezoelectric layer. Each acoustic wave reflector includes a high acoustic impedance layer and may include a low acoustic impedance layer. The acoustic resonator may include a tether that extends laterally to a stacking direction of the layers of the piezoelectric stack. A supporting structure may be coupled to the tether opposite the acoustic resonator for anchoring the acoustic resonator. A mirror, one or more phononic crystals, or both may be positioned on proximate the tether opposite the acoustic resonator to avoid resonant waves from exiting the acoustic resonator in use.

  • Patent number: 10186833
Abstract: A densely-spaced single-emitter laser diode configuration is created by using a laser bar (or similar array configuration) attached to a submount component of a size sufficient to adequately support the enter laser structure. The surface of the submount component upon which the laser structure is attached is metallized and used to form the individual electrical contacts to the laser diodes within the integrated laser structure. Once attached to each other, the laser structure is singulated by creating vertical separations between adjacent light emission areas. The submount metallization is similarly segmented, creating separate electrodes that are used to individually energize their associated laser diodes.

  • Publication number: 20180309469
Abstract: A housing used for electronic devices includes a structural frame element formed of a metal matrix composite (MMC) for providing improved stiffness over other materials currently in use. The MMC is a metal matrix (formed of a material such as aluminum), with a reinforcing material (such as a glass fiber or ceramic) dispersed within the metal matrix. The composition of the reinforcing material, as well as the ratio of reinforcing material to metal, define the stiffness (resistance to bending) and/or strength (resistance to breaking) achieved, and various compositions may be used for different housings, depending on the use of the electronic device. The element may be configured as a structural frame member, or may be embedded within another material forming the structural frame element. In another embodiment, the MMC may be used to form various components of the complete housing, including the enclosure itself.

  • Patent number: 9041897
Abstract: An optical switch for performing high extinction ratio switching of an optical signal includes a beam polarizing element and one or more optical elements. The optical elements are configured to direct an optical signal along a first or second optical path based on the polarization state of the optical signal as it passes through the optical elements. The optical switch performs high extinction ratio switching of the optical signal by preventing unwanted optical energy from entering an output port by using an absorptive or reflective optical element or by directing the unwanted optical energy along a different optical path.
