  • Patent number: 6714705
Abstract: A tunable chromatic dispersion and dispersion slope compensator that utilizes a Virtually Imaged Phased Array (VIPA), a rotating transmissive diffraction grating, and a mirror with different curvatures for different cross-sections is disclosed. The compensator in accordance with the present invention provides simultaneous tunable compensation of chromatic dispersion and dispersion slope utilizing a single apparatus. The amount of compensation is accomplished by rotating the transmissive diffracting grating and/or translating the mirror. • Patent number: 6442311
Abstract: Transmission characteristics of an optical device 200, fabricated from multiple layers 16, 27, 28 of silica-based glass on a silicon substrate 26, are modified by localized thermal treatment. The beam 501 of a carbon-dioxide (CO2) laser 510 is used to selectively soften the core and/or cladding material of a waveguide structure during or after the fabrication process. In one application, softening relieves the strain developed between the waveguide structure and the silicon substrate and substantially reduces or eliminates birefringence. In a second application, the CO2 laser is operated at another power level in order to modify the index of refraction. Changes in the index of refraction change the speed of light through a waveguide thereby changing the phase shift associated with the waveguide. In a third application, the CO2 laser is operated at yet another power level to increase the transmission loss of the waveguide.

  • Patent number: 6392807
Abstract: The present invention provides an improved tunable chromatic dispersion compensator. The compensator includes: a virtually imaged phased array (VIPA); at least one reflector optically coupled to the VIPA; a mirror optically coupled to the at least one reflector; and a movable reflector holder coupled to the at least one reflector, where the movable reflector holder moves the at least one reflector such that a length of a beam path between the VIPA and the at least one reflector and the mirror is variable. The present invention uses the VIPA to produce a controlled variable degree of chromatic dispersion within a plurality of optical channels so as to compensate for unwanted chromatic dispersion in an optical communications system. Positional adjustment of the movable reflector holder permits variable control of the beam path length between the VIPA and the focusing lens.

  • Patent number: 6003222
Abstract: The specification describes techniques for fabricating tapered waveguides in planar photonic integrated circuits with the tapers formed in the z-direction (thickness). The tapers are formed by depositing the core layer in two operations. After depositing the first core layer, the layer is masked, and a step is formed in the first layer. When the second core layer is deposited over the step, a smooth taper results. The core layers are preferably formed by flame hydrolysis. During consolidation the two core layers coalesce into a single homogeneous layer with a smooth taper in the thickness dimension of the waveguide.
