  • Publication number: 20030007205
Abstract: An optical sampling method and apparatus use a probe pulse source of a predetermined optical wavelength range, e.g., 1560 nm, to sample incoming optical pulses in approximately the same wavelength range. The probe pulse source is frequency-doubled e.g., using a frequency doubler such as a nonlinear PPLN crystal, to obtain an intermediate second harmonic which may be filtered with a 780 nm bandpass filter to eliminate at least source frequency noise background. The filtered intermediate second harmonic is then mixed with the user input signal using an optional polarizing beam splitter and a dichroic beam splitter. The mixed signal is sent to a sum frequency generating (SFG) nonlinear crystal, e.g., a PPLN crystal, where the resulting frequency is near the third harmonic. The output from the SFG PPLN crystal may be filtered using a bandpass 515 nm filter to remove unwanted wavelengths and processed to measure/sense the near third harmonic content using a photomultiplier tube (PMT).

  • Patent number: 5952218
Abstract: A bottle retaining mechanism holds a culture bottle in place in a cell in an incubating apparatus which agitates the culture bottle and detects the growth of microorganisms in the culture bottle. When a bottle is not present in the cell of the apparatus, the retaining mechanism moves to a position which reflects light from the light emitter to the light detector in an amount greater than the amount of light reflected off of a bottle when present, so as to indicate when a bottle is not present in a cavity of the bottle holder. The retaining mechanism/reflectance flag also is capable of providing a reference signal for auto-calibration purposes. The amount of light reflected from the retaining mechanism/reflectance flag to the light detector in a cell when no bottle is present can be monitored in order to detect changes in the cell. By monitoring such changes in the empty cell, drift from the original cell calibration can be monitored.

  • Patent number: 5712612
Abstract: A tunneling ferrimagnetic magnetoresistive sensor that has a .DELTA.R/R greater than that of known magnetoresistive sensors, and that, with appropriate electrode materials, can undergo a substantial change in resistance in response to a magnetic field in the intensity range of 10s of Oe, which is typical of the intensity of the magnetic fields encountered in magnetic recording media such as discs and tapes. The tunneling ferrimagnetic magnetoresistive sensor is composed of a stack of thin-film layers that include a layer of a ferrimagnetic material, a layer of a magnetic material, and a layer of an insulator interposed between the layer of the ferrimagnetic material and the layer of the magnetic material. The ferrimagnetic material is conductive. The magnetic material is also conductive and has a coercivity substantially different from that of the ferrimagnetic material.

  • Patent number: 5699201
Abstract: A two stage non-imaging optical concentrator providing high concentration while providing a low aspect ratio and a wide field of view. The invention includes a non-imaging refractive member and a non-imaging reflective funnel member. The reflective funnel has a broad extremity and an opposing narrow extremity. The refractive member is disposed substantially within the funnel, proximate to the narrow extremity of the funnel, so as to provide a low aspect ratio of the two stage non-imaging concentrator of the invention. The low aspect ratio of the concentrator of the invention advantageously provides for compact and efficient packaging of the concentrator in conjunction with mobile optical communication link components.

  • Patent number: 5554585
Abstract: A lanthanum aluminate (LaAlO.sub.3) substrate on which thin films of layered perovskite copper oxide superconductors are formed. Lanthanum aluminate, with a pseudo-cubic perovskite crystal structure, has a crystal structure and lattice constant that closely match the crystal structures and lattice constants of the layered perovskite superconductors. Therefore, it promotes epitaxial film growth of the superconductors, with the crystals being oriented in the proper direction for good superconductive electrical properties, such as a high critical current density. In addition, LaAlO.sub.3 has good high frequency properties, such as a low loss tangent and low dielectric constant at superconductive temperatures. Finally, lanthanum aluminate does not significantly interact with the superconductors. Lanthanum aluminate can also be used to form thin insulating films between the superconductor layers, which allows for the fabrication of a wide variety of superconductor circuit elements.
