  • Publication number: 20140031861
Abstract: Wound closure apparatus is provided having a force-transmitting surface operable to be placed in a proximal, external, wound-closing position on a patient, together with a force-exerting assembly operable to exert a wound-closing pressure against the patient's tissue. The force-transmitting surface is preferably three-dimensionally asymmetric to generate different forces along the length of the surface. The apparatus is especially designed for the closure of wounds attendant to endovascular interventions, e.g., a femoral artery puncture wound. The apparatus is positioned and operated so as to partially close the patient's artery upstream of the arteriotomy. The apparatus and methods hereof may also be used for the closure of wounds created during venous intervention procedures. A smaller wound closure apparatus is provided for the closure of brachial and radial wounds, and has a wrist or arm strap for securing the apparatus onto the wrist or bicep region of a patient.

  • Patent number: 8518323
Abstract: The present invention relates to an apparatus for the treatment of contaminated air or surfaces in order to remove or oxidize odoriferous gases and deleterious compounds therefrom through the utilization of ozone droplets, and more particularly pertains to the treatment of manufacturing facilities, wet wells, seage installations, buildings, equipment and industrial installations and diverse locales subjected to foul air, in order to remove noxious and potentially toxic vapors and impurities from the air or surfaces through the dissolution of ozone in water to form droplets, and spraying the resultant mixture into the air as a fine aqueous mist. Moreover, the invention is also directed to the provision of a process for eliminating odoriferous or noxious vapor gases and harmful constituents entrained therein from a volume of contaminated air or surfaces through the utilization of ozone dissolved in water by the employment of the inventive treatment apparatus.

  • Patent number: 8353929
Abstract: Wound closure apparatus is provided including a body having an elongated, lowermost force-transmitting surface operable to be placed in a proximal, external, wound-closing position on a patient, together with a force-exerting assembly coupled with the body and operable to exert a downwardly directed force serving to generate wound-closing pressure against the patient's tissue. The force-transmitting surface is preferably three-dimensionally asymmetric so that forces of different magnitude are exerted at different locations along the length of the surface. The apparatus is especially designed for the closure of wounds attendant to endovascular interventions, e.g., a femoral artery puncture wound incident to percutaneous cardiac intervention (PCI), and is capable of quickly effecting wound closure with a time-to-ambulation (TTA) of approximately 60 minutes, and with a very low complication rate.

  • Publication number: 20110245868
Abstract: A wound sealing system and method for closing a vascular access site. The method invisions suturing a single continuous Z-stitch into a skin area around a wound and wound tract while the catheter remains within the vessel; covering the wound and suture holes with a hemostatic powder; tightening and knotting the ends of the suture together in an X configuration, applying finger pressure against the hemostatic powder as the catheter is removed; and twisting the suture ends together to tension the Z-stitch, pulling the skin area into inversion. The wound sealing system includes a powder containment device (PCD) which surrounds wound and catheter and a suture twisting member configured with the PCD to tension the Z-stitch closing the wound and arresting blood flow. The hole in the PCD holds a quantity of the hemostatic agent sufficient to cover the wound and suture holes.

  • Patent number: 8029726
Abstract: A system and method for producing an ozone-containing disinfecting cloud includes an enclosure. A pair of atomizing nozzles are affixed to the enclosure in substantially directly opposed relation. Each nozzle produces a spray of ozonated water from compressed gas, ozone, and water and are positioned to direct the sprays toward each other to form a cloud comprising droplets having a size distribution. A portion of the cloud that comprises droplets having a size less than a predetermined limit is expelled from the enclosure. Droplets having a size greater than the predetermined limit remain in the enclosure. The expelled cloud has been found to have a pH lower than a pH of the remaining droplets. The cloud so produced can be used to disinfect an area by directing the cloud to the area desired to be disinfected, which can comprise a surface and/or a space.

  • Patent number: 8007833
Abstract: A method of reducing infections associated with vascular access procedures. A powder containment device (PCD) is preferably adhesively attached to a skin area, the PCD having a hole formed centrally therethrough adapted to completely surround the catheter wound site. The open cavity formed by the PCD being attached to the skin is filled with a hemostatic agent of a salt ferrate and an insoluble cation exchange material. The salt ferrate combines with blood to form a trivalent Fe+++ ion promoting blood clotting and producing oxygen at the wound site for bacteria reduction. The cation exchange material also forms a protective cover over the wound site as the trivalent Fe+++ ion is formed. Semi-occlusive pressure is applied against the hemostatic agent for a time sufficient to arrest blood flow from the wound site right after inserting or removing the catheter. The PCD and hemostatic agent are then covered with an adhesive dressing.

  • Patent number: 7963252
Abstract: Broiler chickens are grown in barns with poultry litter, typically 4-6 inches of pine bark shavings. Growing chickens live on this litter, adding their manure to the litter bed. A liquid top dressing of alkaline-soluble, oxidized humic acid and non indigenous bacteria between flocks can release ammonia harmlessly to the atmosphere and tie up any unreleased nitrogen and phosphorous as water insoluble nitrogen and water insoluble phosphorous. Farmers typically remove and replace the litter bed after 6-8 flocks. Surprisingly, the combination of neutralized, low conductivity humic acid, non indigenous bacteria and substantially complete mechanical litter bed turnover between flocks allows the virtually indefinite use of said litter.
