  • Patent number: 4406825
Abstract: Electrically conducting polyacetylene compositions are described having incorporated therein a fluorine-containing peroxide, such as FSO.sub.2 --O--O--SO.sub.2 F. Preferred compositions exhibit novel metal-like conductivity at temperatures above about 150.degree. K., and specific conductivities above about 10.sup.2 ohm.sup.-1 -cm.sup.-1 at room temperature, as measured by the standard four-probe method. A process for producing the compositions is also described in which polyacetylene is contacted with the peroxide, preferably in an inert liquid solvent at low temperatures.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 23, 1981
Date of Patent: September 27, 1983
    Assignee: Allied Corporation
Inventors: Guido Pez, Lowell R. Anderson

  • Patent number: 4228060
Abstract: A process is described for producing partially crystalline polyacetylene in the cis or trans configurations utilizing.mu.-(.eta..sup.1 :.eta..sup.5 -cyclopentadienyl)-tris(.eta.-cyclopentadienyl)dititanium(Ti-Ti) catalyst. The resulting polyacetylene when "doped" with halogen additives is useful as an electrical conductor or semiconductor. Also described are polyacetylene "gels," consisting essentially of a solid polyacetylene and gel-forming liquid therefor, also containing up to about 10 percent by weight of catalyst, per weight of acetylene, which is used for production of the polyacetylene. The gels are stable to phase separation at room temperature in a closed system, and are useful in preparing randomly and partially chain-aligned polyacetylene films and articles.

  • Patent number: 4200716
Abstract: A process is described for polymerizing acetylene to selectively produce partially crystalline polyacetylene in its cis and trans configurations, which when doped with halogen additives, are useful as electrical conductors or semi-conductors. The polymerization is conducted in a solution containing a lithium dicyclopentadienyl titanium hydride catalyst in a liquid organic solvent therefor, at a temperature in the range of about -120.degree. to +250.degree. C. Lower process temperatures, such as below -60.degree. C., favor the formation of the cis form, and higher temperatures, above 0.degree. C., favor the formation of the trans form.
