    Abstract: A communications device (304) and a method for providing an improved channel access procedure for transmission of data. The communications device and an Access Point (AP) (302) are operating in a wireless communications network (300). The communications device performs a channel sensing procedure using a second slot counter Bn, which second slot counter is equal to a random backoff value or a first slot counter Sn. When trigger frame is received from the AP during the channel sensing procedure, which trigger frame triggers access to a channel, the communications device sets the first slot counter equal to the second slot counter and transmits the data to the AP on the channel. The communications device sets the first slot counter equal to a preset value and transmits the data to the AP in the absence of a received trigger frame and when the channel sensing procedure is completed.
