  • Publication number: 20120214501
Abstract: A method in a user equipment for handling cell selection is provided. While in dedicated mode the user equipment receives from a radio network node a measurement information message which indicates at least two frequencies associated with a respective cell in a respective radio access technology. While it is in dedicated mode, the user equipment performs measurements on the frequencies to obtain a respective measurement value for each one of them, and receives a selection indicator message comprising a respective priority for each one of the frequencies. The user equipment obtains a respective threshold value for each of the frequencies and successively evaluates the frequencies in descending priority order until a frequency is determined for which the measurement value exceeds its respective threshold value. When entering idle mode, the user equipment selects cell based on the evaluation.

  • Publication number: 20120046037
Abstract: User Equipment (UE) receiving non-voice packet switched services in an Evolved Universal Mobile Telecommunications System Terrestial Radio Access Network (eUTRAN) cell undergoes handover to a circuit switched GSM/Edge Radio Access Network (GERAN)/UTRAN cell in response to a voice service page. An eNodeB of the active eUTRAN cell uses a measurement report history for the UE to select an available circuit switched cell for handover. The voice service is established in the circuit switched domain of a GERAN/UTRAN cell to ensure service continuity regardless of UE mobility that would otherwise not be possible if the voice service was established in the eUTRAN cell. A Gs-like interface between a Mobile Switching Center (MSC) of the CS Core Network and the Mobility Management Entity (MME) of the Evolved Packet Core provides an interface for page requests and location update procedures to be performed.

  • Publication number: 20110217952
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and arrangement in a serving Radio Network Controller, SRNC for controlling inter RAT handover to E-UTRAN of a UE with E-UTRA capability operating in a serving network comprising said SRNC, wherein the SRNC receives, from a Serving GPRS Support Node, SGSN, security keys generated at authentication and key agreement, AKA, upon attachment of the UE to the serving network; characterized in the steps of determining (202) which type of UICC the UE is equipped with by analyzing the security keys received from SGSN; using the knowledge of which type of UICC the UE is equipped with to base a decision (204) on whether to allow handover of the UE to E-UTRAN.

  • Publication number: 20110182177
Abstract: A first communications device communicates with a second communications device by means of a communications network. The first communications device receives information from the communications network, wherein the information comprises a network load value and a mean delay time value. The first communications device ascertains whether the network load value satisfies a predetermined relationship with respect to a threshold load value and if the predetermined relationship is satisfied then it communicates a data packet over the network at a designated time that is ascertained by ascertaining one of a number of different wait time values, wherein the ascertained wait time value has a mathematical expectation equal to the mean delay time value. The first communication device then waits an amount of time corresponding to the ascertained wait time, without attempting to communicate the data packet over the communications network during the time in which the first communications device is waiting.

  • Publication number: 20100080160
Abstract: The present invention provides, inter alia, a method of operation of a radio base station in a wireless telecommunications system, in which system information is transmitted on a broadcast control channel. The method comprises the steps of transmitting the broadcast control channel continuously on a first carrier; and also transmitting the broadcast control channel non-continuously and periodically at regular intervals. This prevents or at least minimizes, for example, MBMS data loss when a UE with a single receiver listens to a dedicated MBMS carrier.

  • Patent number: 7003297
Abstract: Attempted utilization (by a user equipment unit which subscribes to its subscription operator network) of a restricted cell is precluded or rejected by an auxiliary operator's network, the restricted cell being any cell of the auxiliary operator network for which a subscription operator network has a competing cell. The rejected attempted utilization can be one of (1) handover to the restricted cell, and (2) cell/URA updating by the user equipment unit via the restricted cell. Further, preclusion of attempted utilization of the restricted cell occurs when the user equipment unit attempts cell reselection.

  • Patent number: 6879832
Abstract: In the context of a radio communications system that includes a core network coupled to a radio access network (RAN) and a plurality of mobile terminals, a connection may be established between the core network and one of the plurality of mobile terminals through the radio access network. A temporary RAN identifier is associated with the mobile terminal for the established connection. The temporary RAN identifier is used to assist in the transfer of information pertaining to the established connection or to the establishment of that connection through the radio access network. The radio access network includes a first RAN node associated with a first geographical coverage area and a second RAN node associated with a second geographical coverage area. When the mobile terminal moves from the first coverage area to the second coverage area, the connection is re-established through the RAN by way of the first and second RAN nodes using the temporary RAN identifier.

  • Patent number: 6834191
Abstract: A radio access network portion of a telecommunications network (18) which serves a mobile station (MS) is connecting to a core network. The radio access network portion has plural base stations (BS) serving respective plural cells (C), as well as plural control nodes (RNCs). The control nodes include a first control node (RNC1) for controlling a first group of the plural base stations and a second control node (RNC2) for controlling a second group of the plural base stations. A multicell area (MCA) includes cells served by at least some of the first group of base stations and cells served by at least some of the second group of base stations. The radio access network portion of a telecommunications network further has a paging control node which stores information regarding the multicell area.

  • Patent number: 6628942
Abstract: A paging origination identifier associated with an origination of a page to a mobile radio terminal is included with a mobile terminal's response to the page. For example, assuming that the page to the mobile terminal is in a first area, the mobile terminal responds to the page from a second area and includes the identifier in that response. The second area may be a cell controlled by another radio network control node, another radio network operator, or even another type of cellular system. The identifier is used to route the page response through the radio network ultimately to the paging originator. The identifier may be, for example, a paging area identifier, a registration area identifier, or a network exchange identifier. Another example identifier is the cell where the mobile terminal received the page. Cell evaluation and selection processes need only be performed while the mobile terminal is listening to the paging channel, for example, thereby saving mobile terminal battery life.

  • Patent number: 6205336
Abstract: A hierarchically structured cellular network is disclosed. When an active mobile station requests a service that requires the use of a network resource not available in the cell handling the ongoing call (or, alternatively, during call set up), the network checks for cells on the higher levels to determine if the required resource is available. If the resource is available in a higher level cell, the call is handed over to that cell and the resource is allocated to the call. The call can be maintained in the higher level cell until the resource is no longer needed, or a “better” cell capable of providing the required resource is found.
