  • Patent number: 5985581
Abstract: The invention provides a method of diagnosing Alzheimer's disease. The method utilizes presenilin-1, whose level is found to be substantially decreased in Alzheimer's patients. Included in the invention are diagnostic kits for Alzheimer's disease and methods of screening for effective therapeutics for the disease. The invention also provides a method of studying the function and regulation of presenilin-1 in brain by the use of primate retinoblastoma cells.

  • Patent number: 5768479
Abstract: A method for generating a physical integrated circuit layout, using the similarity between a template and the physical layout as a metric. This automated template-driven layout methodology creates a physical integrated circuit layout which approximates the specified template as closely as practicably possible. The similarity of the positioning of circuit elements in a physical layout is improved with regard to the positioning of those same circuit elements in a template. The circuit elements' placement is incrementally improved by attaching a cost to each placement, with a lower cost reflecting a better match between circuit element placement in the physical layout and the template. Fuzzy logic concepts are employed to determine the cost of a given layout.

  • Patent number: 5459756
Abstract: A sampling phase detector for a data bit synchronizer produces a constant level in the absence of data bit transitions. Reference voltages are provided and a switch selects between these reference voltages to provide an output which changes only when a data bit is detected and otherwise remains at a constant level. A loop filter operates together with the sampling phase detector to provide the constant voltage output in the absence of data bit transitions.

  • Patent number: 5454425
Abstract: A metal matrix composite is produced by closely aligning together a sheet of hydrided or hydrogenated alloy with a filament preform at a relatively low temperature. The resulting metal matrix will have a minimum of excessive chemical reactions at the alloy-filament interface thereby allowing the composite to achieve theoretical mechanical property values.

  • Patent number: 5386204
Abstract: A high isolation microwave module includes a housing floor with mounting surfaces for placing microwave components and housing walls ending in housing wall ends coupled to and projecting from the housing floor. A lid including a lid plate and lid walls ending in lid wall ends projects from the lid plate. The lid walls extend toward the housing floor and the plurality of housing walls extend toward the lid plate but neither the lid wall ends nor the housing wall ends are coupled to the housing floor or lid plate, respectively. A plurality of cavities exist between the adjacent lid walls between the housing and the lid plate and a plurality of irises exist between immediately adjacent housing walls and corresponding lid walls. The irises and cavities act as a multi-section high pass filter to provide attenuation to a microwave signal passing through the module.
