  • Patent number: 4335047
Abstract: A process for the preparation of 6-membered cyclic acetals of trans-4-chloro-3-methyl-but-2-en-1-al by reacting the corresponding acetals of 3-methyl-but-2-en-1-al (prenal), in a halohydrocarbon, with sulfuryl chloride and for their subsequent oxidation to trans-3-methyl-but-2-ene-1,4-dial-1-monoacetals (3-methyl-fumarodialdehyde-1-monoacetals). The trans-3-methyl-but-2-ene-1,4-dial-1-monoacetals are of great importance in terpene syntheses, since they make it possible to carry out successive Wittig reactions giving a very large number of compounds of biological and pharmacological importance.

  • Patent number: 4268444
Abstract: A process for the preparation of polyene-aldehydes, derived from 2,6-dimethyl-2,4,6,8-nonatetraen-1-al by substitution in the 9-position, by means of the Wittig ylide synthesis. The process is based on the observation, contrary to all expectation, that on reacting 2,6-dimethyl-octa-2,4,6-triene-1,8-dial with an equimolar amount of an ylide, it is exclusively the 8-al group of the dialdehyde which reacts. This specificity of the reaction is of particular importance for the preparation of the food dye .beta.-apo-8'-carotinal.

  • Patent number: 4256643
Abstract: 3-Chloro-3-methyl-butane-1,4-dial-bis-acetals and 3-methyl-but-2-ene-1,4-dial-bis-acetals are obtained by reacting a six-membered cyclic acetal of 3-methyl-but-3-en-1-al with an alkyl nitrite in the presence of methanol and hydrogen chloride and, if desired, eliminating HCl in the conventional manner. The butanedial-bis-acetals and butenedial-bis-acetals are valuable intermediates through which the trans-3-methyl-but-2-ene-1,4-dial-1-acetals, which are sought-after products for terpene syntheses, can be obtained in an industrially particularly advantageous manner.
