  • Patent number: 7463599
Abstract: A method and apparatus for detecting a periodic message in a mobile communication system includes initiating, at a receiver, a reception of synchronization data a predetermined amount of time prior to a current periodic message. The predetermined amount of time is based on at least one of an estimated signal quality value from at least one prior periodic message and an estimated error in the at least one prior periodic message. The synchronization data is used to achieve synchronization, and the current periodic message is detected based on the synchronization.

  • Patent number: 7346126
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are described for estimating a gain offset between two channels in a communication system. The gain offset arises from the system's transmission of signals on the two channels at different powers. The estimated gain offset is used for determining a set of complex channel estimates.

  • Publication number: 20070116103
Abstract: A searcher uses an input signal, and for example, a matched filter to generate a first set of candidate paths. A selector uses the input signal and the first set of candidate paths to generate a second set of paths. The second set of paths is used to configure the fingers of a RAKE receiver. According to one aspect of the invention, the first set of candidate paths contains M paths, and the second stage uses M correlators to generate a set of M correlation values. The second stage uses the M correlation values to select N paths that are used to configure the N fingers of the RAKE receiver. According to another aspect of the invention, the first set of candidate paths contains M paths, and the second stage uses a multiple of M correlators to track the M paths and generate a set of M estimates. The second stage uses the M estimates to select N paths that are used to configure the N fingers of the RAKE receiver.

  • Patent number: 7197063
Abstract: Method and system are disclosed for providing advanced RAKE delay control in wireless communications systems. The RAKE delay control method and system of the invention is capable of tracking presently known paths over time and merging the tracking results with new path searcher results. The invention is particularly suitable for devices where the resources (e.g., computational load, power) available for detecting the multipath components are limited. The result is a resource efficient architecture for positioning the RAKE fingers to best extract the signal power available in the channel and to utilize the inherent diversity due to the multipath nature of the signal.

  • Patent number: 7149258
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are described for estimating a phase offset between two channels in a communication system to allow the use of both in determining a complex channel estimate. The phase offset arises from the system's rotation of only one of the two signaling channels prior to its transmission on one of the two antennas in transmission diversity mode. The phase offset is calculated in a receiver, such as a mobile station. For example, in a 3GPP system, the DPCH, which is rotated, and the CPICH, which is not, may be used in channel estimation.

  • Publication number: 20060240794
Abstract: A method and apparatus in a radio receiver for canceling interference from a high power, high data rate signal received in a combined signal that includes a contribution from the high power signal and a contribution from a lower power signal. It is first determined whether the high power signal was correctly received. A CRC checksum may be used to determine whether the high power signal was received with a good reliability. Thereafter, the contribution of the high power signal is removed from the received signal only if the high power signal was correctly received. The contribution of the high power signal may be removed by hard-subtracting the contribution of the high power signal from the received signal if all of the bits of the checksum are correct, and soft-subtracting the contribution of the high power signal from the received signal if most, but not all, of the bits in the checksum are correct.

  • Patent number: 7065130
Abstract: A method and system enables matched filters of a CDMA system to be simplified using a two stage search. A course stage and a fine stage jointly produce the location(s) of received signal path-rays. In a first stage, an oversampled digital signal is decimated, and the decimated signal is applied to a matched filter to eventually produce an approximate location. In a second stage, the oversampled signal is shifted based on the determined approximate location and then correlated to a generated code, and a more-exact location is selected from the outputs of the correlations. Alternatively, a shifted version of the generated code is correlated to the oversampled signal, and the more-exact location is selected from the outputs of those correlations.

  • Publication number: 20060083292
Abstract: A Direct-Sequence Code Division Multiple Access (DS-CDMA) receiver and method of allocating probing correlators and combining correlators (fingers). A front-end processor converts received radio signals to baseband samples. Based on average path strengths, a controller adaptively allocates probing correlators to signal paths to de-spread certain received signals. Based on path power estimates, the controller adaptively allocates combining correlators to signal paths. The allocations may be made to minimize the total received power at the receiver, or to achieve acceptable performance for all users.

  • Publication number: 20060007990
Abstract: A wireless communication receiver, such as the receiver included in a wireless communication transceiver implemented in a base station or in a mobile station of a wireless communication network, includes a parametric G-RAKE receiver circuit and a method that compute parametric scaling parameters on a per transmission interval basis. In one embodiment, measured impairment correlations are obtained for an individual transmission slot and used to estimate instantaneous values of the scaling parameters. One or both of those instantaneous values are then constrained according to one or more defined limits. In other embodiments, multiple transmission slots are used to increase the number of measurements available to estimate the scaling parameters, with parameter constraining optionally applied. Further embodiments use iterative methods and/or solve for one parameter, and use the results to obtain the other parameter(s).

  • Patent number: 6734749
Abstract: Direct frequency modulation of a phase-locked loop (PLL) output signal is achieved by means of a modulation signal comprising a digital sequence. The digital modulation signal is coupled to the input of the VCO of the PLL, and is also coupled to drive an up-down counter. The output of the counter is coupled to a D/A converter to provide a compensation signal for the PLL. When the counter output reaches values representing modulation-induced phase errors of +360 degrees and −360 degrees, the counter generates signals respectively corresponding thereto to adjust the PLL frequency divider.

  • Patent number: 6631277
Abstract: In a radio network which employs adaptive antennas for transmission of data to mobiles methods and apparatus are provided for improving the reception of transmitted data. When a block is to be transmitted in a first beam of the antenna and the block contains information for the mobile in the second beam, a modulation and coding scheme is used for the transmission of the block such that the modulation and coding scheme provides greater protection to the portion of the block containing information for the mobile in the second beam. The use of greater protection for the portion of the block which includes information for the mobile in the second beam increases the probability that the mobile in the second beam can receive and correctly decode the information intended for the mobile in the second beam in the block.
