  • Publication number: 20020136234
Abstract: Path delays experienced by a received signal are estimated for use in, for example, a RAKE receiver. This involves hypothesizing a plurality of path delays. For each of a plurality of measurement time slots and for each of the hypothesized path delays, a measurement based on the received signal is made along with a determination of whether a fade occurred. For each of the plurality of measurement time slots and for each of the hypothesized path delays, the measurement is combined with a corresponding one of a plurality of cumulative metrics only if it was determined that no fade occurred. Then, for each of the plurality of hypothesized path delays, the corresponding one of the plurality of cumulative metrics is used to determine whether the hypothesized path delay corresponds to a real path delay.

  • Publication number: 20020123370
Abstract: In a radio network which employs adaptive antennas for transmission of data to mobiles methods and apparatus are provided for improving the reception of transmitted data. When a block is to be transmitted in a first beam of the antenna and the block contains information for the mobile in the second beam, a modulation and coding scheme is used for the transmission of the block such that the modulation and coding scheme provides greater protection to the portion of the block containing information for the mobile in the second beam. The use of greater protection for the portion of the block which includes information for the mobile in the second beam increases the probability that the mobile in the second beam can receive and correctly decode the information intended for the mobile in the second beam in the block.

  • Patent number: 6373882
Abstract: The present invention provides a system and method for reducing the power consumed by a RAKE receiver. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, an environment variation estimator is implemented in a CDMA mobile station. The environment variation estimator is connected to the searcher of the RAKE receiver and provides an estimate of the rate at which the mobile station's environment is changing. By providing an estimate of the rate of change of the mobile station's environment, the duty cycle of the searcher can be optimized, thereby reducing the overall power consumed by the receiver. By also providing the estimate to the RAKE fingers, channel tracking can be improved.

  • Patent number: 6337876
Abstract: A transmitter in a radiocommunications system such as a Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) communications system transmits one set of data on an in-phase (I-) channel and another set of data on a quadrature (Q-) channel. The transmitter generates a gain signal, &bgr;, and multiplies the digital data associated with the Q-channel by the gain signal, &bgr;. Complexity of the multiplication operation is reduced by limiting the gain signal, &bgr;, to a finite number of values that are exactly representable by a predefined number of bits, such as 4-bit values to the right of a binary radix point. Modulation inaccuracy associated with quantization of &bgr; can be eliminated by utilizing the same quantized values of &bgr; in all components within the radiocommunications system.

  • Publication number: 20010040933
Abstract: A signal filter comprises a plurality of adding elements (21), each of which has first and second inputs and an output and is operable to provide an output signal representative of the sum of a pair of input signals. The filter also includes a plurality of delay line elements (22), each delay line element having an input and an output and being operable to delay transfer of an input signal from the input to the output by a predetermined time period. The adding elements (21) and delay line elements (22) are connected in a series such that the output of each adding elements, except the last adding element in the series, is connected to the first input of the next adding element in the series via an associated delay line element, the output of the last adding element in the series being connected to the first input of the first adding element in the series via a delay line element. The second input of the adding elements are connected to receive respective input signals.

  • Patent number: 6151482
Abstract: An operation and maintenance communications link is established between an antenna near parts component and transmitter and receiver of a transceiver site assembly. The transmitter and receiver are connected to a remote antenna by means of a radio frequency feeder supporting a plurality of communications channels. A radio transceiver is connected to the antenna near parts component. A communications connection comprising the operation and maintenance communications link is established between the radio frequency transceiver and the transmitter and receiver over the radio frequency feeder connected to the antenna using a selected one of the supported communications channels. Another implementation further utilizes an air interface connection supporting the selected communications channel to provide the operation and maintenance communications link.

  • Patent number: 5537434
Abstract: A communication system having a frequency hopping scheme which provides an improved initial synchronization in mobile stations of control channels. Special synchronization bursts are inserted into the hop sequence of the control channels which, when decoded, give the mobile station the hop sequence to follow for the control channel.

  • Patent number: 5530917
Abstract: A method for optimizing the use of channels, the changing of channels and handover procedures in a mobile telecommunications system for instance, wherein parameters belonging to the mobile telecommunications system generate the load values for the connections via different channels/base stations between subscribers in a public telephone network and mobile stations in the mobile telecommunications systems. Different kinds of parameters can be compared directly by means of the load values which are combined to provide a total load value for each connection. A first total load value is generated for a connection set-up between one of the subscribers and one of the mobile stations. The total load values for the connection are estimated for alternative channels/base stations and these total load values are compared with the first total load value. The system changes to the channel/base station that has the most favorable load value, on the basis of the comparison.

  • Patent number: 5392453
Abstract: A method of effecting handover in a mobile telephone system comprising fixed base stations and mobile stations. The system includes several layers of radio cells, where a cell in a given layer covers several cells in a nearest underlying or subordinate layer. A mobile station moving in a microcell may find it difficult to handover to another microcell in the same cell layer, when the signal strength of the established connection in the first microcell is rapidly weakened. No information concerning the target base station can be transmitted. According to the proposed method, handover is effected to a cell in the nearest overlying cell layer, a so-called umbrella cell, either permanently (the mobile is moving quickly) or temporarily (the mobile is moving slowly). In the latter case, handover is made back to a microcell. The handover command is either transmitted from the base station of the microcell having elevated power, or from the target base station.
