    Abstract: A process for depositing porous silicon oxide-based films using a sol-gel approach utilizing a precursor solution formulation which includes a purified nonionic surfactant and an additive among other components, where the additive is either an ionic additive or an amine additive which forms an ionic ammonium type salt in the acidic precursor solution. Using this precursor solution formulation enables formation of a film having a dielectric constant less than 2.5, appropriate mechanical properties, and minimal levels of alkali metal impurities. In one embodiment, this is achieved by purifying the surfactant and adding ionic or amine additives such as tetraalkylammonium salts and amines to the stock precursor solution.

    Abstract: In accordance with the invention, a MEMs device comprises a component layer, an actuator layer and an intervening spacer. The component layer, the spacer and the actuator layer are assembled at ambient temperature and held together in lateral alignment by resilient spring members. The spacer provides the walls of a cavity between a component and an actuator to permit movement of the component. The walls are advantageously conductive and cover the bulk of the peripheral boundary of the cavity to provide electrostatic isolation and aerodynamic isolation.

    Abstract: The invention relates to use of a solder composition exhibiting a desired combination of high creep resistance at typical operating temperatures and low stress in formed solder joints. The invention uses a solder containing 82 to 85 wt. % Au, 12 to 14 wt. % Sn, and 3 to 4 wt. % Ga (optionally with up to 2 wt. % additional elements). The small amount of added Ga induces a significant depression in the liquidus temperatures of both Au and Sn, and thus a depressed melting point (about 27° C. less than eutectic Au—Sn solder), and also provides an enhanced temperature-sensitivity of the solder's creep resistance.

Web pages are requested from a computer serving Web pages by a client using a Web browser, the content comprising the requested page or pages being stored and managed by a database or other data store. Embedded in the requested page is a dynamic database reader (DDR), which transmits a request to a Control Program (CP) running in the server. Upon this transmission the CP queries the database for page content and returns the content to the DDR. As the requested data is received, the DDR places editorial controls in the vicinity of one or more editable content elements and passes the resultant data off to the browser to be rendered and displayed to the user.

    Abstract: A solder composition that bonds well to oxides and other surfaces to which solder bonding is conventionally difficult is provided. The solder is particularly useful for reliable bonding and packaging of optical components that often have oxide surfaces. The solder composition exhibits a microstructure containing a solder matrix in which is distributed fine, micron-scale islands of rare-earth-containing intermetallic particles. The existence of the islands makes the rare earth elements better available for bonding, and reduce the extent to which the rare earths are oxidized. Advantageously, the solder contains Au and/or Ag, in which the rare earth elements tend to have some solid solubility. Due to this solubility, the Au and/or Ag tend to provide some additional protection of the rare earths against oxidation, and thereby also provide accelerated dissolution of the rare earth into the molten solder.

Because rare earths have some solid solubility in Au and Ag, the problem of intermetallic formation is lessened or eliminated, and improved bonding to oxide surfaces is attained.

    Abstract: A variable attenuator device is disclosed that may be magnetically and latchably controlled such that it does not require a continuous power supply to maintain a particular loss level. The variable attenuator comprises two optical components disposed in spaced apart relation to define a gap between them and a magnetic shutter positioned within the gap. The shutter is movable, due to its magnetic properties, from a first position to at least a second position, where the second position may be within, partially within, or outside of the gap. A mechanism is provided for magnetizing or actuating the shutter to cause it to move from the first position to the at least second position. When the shutter is in the first position, it causes a certain amount of attenuation in the signal being transmitted between the two optical components, and when it moves to the at least second position, a different amount of attenuation is caused, such that movement of the shutter causes a variation in the attenuation.

    Abstract: An article comprising an alloy exhibiting high magnetostriction in relatively low applied magnetic fields is provided, the alloy capable of being formed in a relatively easy manner and having desirable physical properties. The Co—Fe alloy of the invention exhibits a magnetostriction of at least 100×10−6 in a magnetic field less than 400 Oe, advantageously in a magnetic field less than 100 Oe. The alloy is formed by plastically deforming the alloy, e.g., by cold rolling, to a reduction in cross-sectional area of at least 50%, and then heat treating the alloy to induce recrystallization. This combination of plastic deformation and recrystallization was found to provide desirable grain growth and microstructure. The resultant alloy is useful in a variety of device components, including transducers, frequency filters, signal delay lines, and optical fiber grating devices.

    Abstract: Aligned Optoelectronic assembly with improved dimensional stability is disclosed. The assembly is carried out with a bonding material, either a solder or an adhesive, which contain insoluble, non-coarsening dispersoid particles. New solder compositions having enhanced mechanical properties are described. Relatively inert particles having a diameter of 5000 nm or less are dispersed in a solder material having an average grain size of approximately 10,000 nm or less to produce such solder compositions. The dispersed particles act as physical barriers in solders substantially impeding the motion of grain boundaries and inhibiting grain growth during thermal and stress cycling which substantially inhibits coarsening. As a consequence, the optoelectronic device assembly according to the invention exhibit substantially improved dimensional stability, with the rate of creep deformation at the joint reduced by a factor of at least two.
