  • Patent number: 6804212
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and arrangement for establishing a connection between a base station and mobile station. The invention is especially applicable to digital TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) and CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) cellular systems which use extended cell operating ranges. An idea of the invention is that when establishing a connection a mobile station transmits access bursts using a preferably extended timing advance different from zero. In one embodiment, different timing advance values are used until a timing advance is found with which the burst falls on a CCCH channel time slot at the base station. The mobile station preferably transmits the first bursts using the normal timing advance, the next bursts using a second timing advance, the corresponding timing advance parameter value being the normal timing advance parameter maximum value+1, and the subsequent bursts using a timing advance of 2×the second timing advance, etc.

  • Patent number: 6795419
Abstract: A method is disclosed for operating a wireless telecommunication system for providing a Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service MBMS broadcast transmission from a network operator (10) to a mobile station (100). A first step determines a minimum bit rate requirement to broadcast a MBMS message and a number of radio blocks per time period that are required to satisfy the bit rate requirement. A second step allocates the determined number of radio blocks in accordance with a multislot transmission technique, wherein a plurality of time slots are used per frame, such that the mobile station is provided with at least one idle radio block between two active MBMS transmission periods. The at least one idle radio block may occur between two active MBMS radio blocks. A third step transmits the determined radio block allocation to the mobile station. In the preferred embodiment the step of determining may include a consideration of radio channel conditions and a multislot class of the mobile station.

  • Patent number: 6748219
Abstract: An apparatus and method for providing a dynamic mapping of channel numbers to physical frequencies for some cells of a cellular telephone system, for use in case of a cellular telephone system representing physical frequencies by channel numbers and providing a fixed mapping of channel numbers to physical frequencies. The method includes a step of providing an information element indicating the dynamic mapping, and is performed in a way that is compatible with an existing channel numbering space, thereby keeping unchanged any existing signaling messages. The method also provides for a change in a dynamic mapping: a duplicated mapping is broadcast in which two non-overlapping sets of channel numbers are both mapped at least in part to a same frequency block, the broadcasting being continued for a predetermined time assumed to be of sufficient extent that any mobile phones operating in the cells will have decoded the duplicated mapping.

  • Publication number: 20040095953
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for improving the quality of control signalling based on signalling messages controlling speech or data transmission over an air interface between at least two radio terminals of a radio communications system, said speech or data being transmitted in at least one traffic channel of said radio communications system, and said signalling messages being transmitted in control channels associated with said at least one traffic channel. In order to allow for an improved performance of SACCH and FACCH, it is proposed that a first and a second signalling message with identical content are transmitted in two separate associated control channels. Alternatively, it is proposed that a signalling message included in a single ACCH is coded with a stronger coding. The invention relates equally to corresponding radio terminals and modules for such units.

  • Patent number: 6738365
Abstract: A method of improving connection quality and system capacity in a cellular radio system is disclosed. Each cell in the cellular radio system has at least one base station (BS) communicating with subscriber terminals (MS) in its area. The method is characterized in that the subscriber terminal transmits in two time slots and receives in two time slots during one frame, and that the subscriber terminal employs the time slots of the frame following the frame used for transmission and reception for measuring neighboring base stations. Owing to the method and cellular radio system, methods developed for improving connection quality and system capacity in a cellular radio system, such as frequency hopping, discontinuous transmission and power control, can be used on the traffic channels of the base station BCCH carrier wave frequency.

  • Patent number: 6690751
Abstract: A method is presented for demodulating and decoding a block of received digital information consisting of a number of subblocks. One of a predefined number of demodulation methods is selected for demodulating each subblock and each subblock is demodulated with the demodulation method selected for it. The subblocks constituting a block of digital information are combined between their demodulation and the decoding of the block of digital information. Soft decoding is used to decode the block of digital information, wherein each subblock is converted to a sequence of soft decoding values associated with certain probabilities of allowed state transitions in the decoding process. For each subblock it is determined, after its demodulation, whether the correct demodulation method was selected for it.

  • Publication number: 20020194566
Abstract: A method of transmitting inband signaling messages in a mobile telecommunications network using SACCH burst. In order to avoid puncturing a fixed amount of bits out of every SACCH burst for inband signaling, the 40-bit FIRE code of the SACCH is replaced with a shorter CRC code, thereby creating unused bits for carrying the messages. After the SACCH block is shortened, a plurality of dummy bits are inserted into the shortened block prior to applying a ½ convolutional code to obtain the coded block. The coded block is further interleaved, reordered and mapped into 4 SACCH bursts. The dummy bits in each SACCH block are then replaced by the inband signaling for transmission.
