  • Publication number: 20030140169
Abstract: A communications network comprising: a connection data store for storing: a list of addresses accessible in the network, and associated with each address a list of connection types indicating the types of connection that can be made to that address, and associated with at least some of the pairings of address and connection type a respective identity of a terminal connected in the network; a connection identification unit for, when a connection is to be made in the network, identifying and address to which the connection is addressed and a desired type of the connection; a connection controller for receiving from the connection identification unit the address and type of the desired connection, searching the connection data store for a pairing of that address and service type, and on finding that pairing determining the associated terminal identity; and a routing unit for receiving that terminal identity and routing the connection to that terminal.

  • Patent number: 6591116
Abstract: A mobile equipment (10), such as a cellular radio telephone, includes a controller (18) coupled to a wireless transceiver (14, 16) for bidirectionally communicating with one of a plurality of different networks (32, 32′), such as a GSM network and a Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) network. A data storage module (28), referred to herein as a SIM/USIM or as a UICC (UMTS Integrated Circuit Card), is readably coupled to the controller. The module stores information for specifying at least an identification and the operational capabilities of the module in each of the plurality of different networks. The controller is responsive to a request received from one of the plurality of networks through the transceiver for accessing the module to retrieve the stored information and for transmitting the retrieved information to the requesting one of the networks through the transceiver.

  • Publication number: 20030114151
Abstract: A method and arrangement for implementing the acquisition of data relating to network-specific supplementary services and a method for updating subscriber data relating to network-specific supplementary services in a telecommunications system. The subscriber data relating to the network-specific supplementary services is permanently stored in a subscriber identity module of a user terminal. The user terminal is arranged, at least when registering in a visited network, to automatically transmit the subscriber data relating to the supplementary services of the visited network for temporary storage to the subscriber database of the visited network.

  • Patent number: 6505044
Abstract: A method, a system, or an article of manufacture provides Mobility Management (MM), for example, an update procedure, in a Core Network (CN) of a mobile communication system. The Mobile Station (MS) includes an indicator which defines an update type. The update type includes: all CN entities; one type of CN entity only. If the indicator has the update type of all CN entities, the MS registers all CN entities. If the indicator has the update type of one type of CN entity only, the MS registers the one type of CN entity only. The CN entities may be MSC/NVLR CN entity, SGSN CN entity, or other CN entity. The method includes the MS determining to which of the CN entity to perform the update procedure; the MS updating the CN entity; the CN acknowledging the MS whether update is successful or failed; and the CN acknowledging the MS whether update of other CN entity is needed, if needed, the CN defining to which of the CN entity to perform update, and continuing the update of the defined CN entity.

  • Publication number: 20020163908
Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for facilitating synchronization of the operational codec modes of communication stations which communicate pursuant to a communication session. Signaling is provided to indicate allowed AMR (adaptive multi rate) codec modes to optimize speech connections in a GSM/EDGE radio access network (GERAN). RTP messages are defined, such as defining new message types or new field extensions in RTP messages to identify the codec modes.

  • Patent number: 6438370
Abstract: A scheme for providing a notification to a Mobile Station (MS) to initiate a location update in a mobile telecommunication system, a scheme for providing update of location of the MS to a new Core Network (CN) entity via interface between the CN entities, a scheme for providing update of location of the MS to a new CN entity via interface between a CN entity and a Serving RNC (SRNC), a scheme for providing an inter Core Network (CN) handover, e.g. inter-SGSN handover, in a mobile telecommunication system, are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6434393
Abstract: The claimed invention relates to a radio telecommunications system using channels with high penetration capacity. When a user terminal enters a shadowed area, the user terminal starts listening to a paging channel allocated for transmission of a high-penetration paging message. The subscriber thereby remains with reach of teleservices not otherwise provided for.

  • Publication number: 20020086670
Abstract: Implementing control signallings in a telecommunication system comprising at least one terminal and one telecommunication network, the telecommunication network comprising at least one access network and one or more core networks. Within a certain time, the terminal determines the detected control signalling needs and transmits a request for maintaining a radio connection to the telecommunication network if several control signallings are to be carried out. The control signallings are carried out successively between the terminal and one or more core networks without releasing the radio connection between the terminal and the access network.

  • Publication number: 20020067311
Abstract: A phased array antenna in space receives a beacon signal from an earth based beacon station at each of a plurality of antenna elements which make up the array. The beacon signal is passed to a beacon signal processor which determines the phase differences between the signal received at different antenna elements. The phase differences provide a measure of the physical displacement of the antenna elements from their nominal relative positions, due to distortion of the antenna structure resulting from, for example, gravitational forces. To correct for the effect of the displacement, phase compensation signals are generated corresponding to the phase differences and are applied to the communication signals being transmitted from and received at the antenna elements.

  • Publication number: 20020064144
Abstract: The present invention proposes a method for performing a relocation procedure for a user equipment (UE) communicating in a communication network and being movable therein, said communication network comprising at least two serving nodes (SGSN1, SGSN2) of a core network of said communication network, each of which serving nodes being connected to at least one access network controller (RNC1, RNC2) of a access network of said communication network, each of which access network controllers being adapted to perform a communication with said user equipment (UE) within its coverage area, and each serving node being assigned to a respective routing area (RA1, RA2), said method comprising the steps of monitoring (S100) the occurrence of a relocation condition, deciding (S200), whether said relocation condition is an inter serving node relocation condition, switching (S400) the communication from a first access network controller (RNC1) of a first serving node (SGSN1) to a second access network controller (RNC2) of a

  • Patent number: 6397065
Abstract: A cellular radio access network and a location updating in a cordless communications system, in a cellular radio access network (1), which is connected to one or more core networks (2, 3, 4, 5) or services (SP2 to SP5), each of them having a dedicated mobility management. In a cell, identities of all those location areas are broadcast to which said cell belongs. A subscriber terminal (MS) sends to the radio access network only one location updating message irrespective of how many core networks (2, 3, 4, 5) or services (SP2 to SP5) have a simultaneously changing location area at a handover from one cell to another. On the basis of the information contained in the location updating message, the network (1) defines the core networks or services and location areas to which the location updating applies and sends a location updating message informing the new location of the subscriber or the subscriber terminal separately to each defined core network or service.

  • Patent number: 5960354
Abstract: A cellular mobile telephone system is provided. The system operates on frequency bands each of which comprises a respective total number of sub-bands. Each sub-band has a different respective frequency. The system includes a network of base stations, and mobile stations. The mobile stations comprise a given mobile station communicating with the network on a sub-band within a current operational frequency band comprising one of the operational frequency bands. The network transmits to the given mobile station certain information regarding designated sub-bands for which the given mobile station is to perform measurements. The certain information comprises a minimum number of alternate sub-bands of an alternate operational frequency band other than the current operational frequency band.
