  • Patent number: 5949603
Abstract: A self servo writing file and method for writing servo patterns in a direct access storage device are provided. First servo information is written on a data storage media at a first crash stop. The transducer heads are moved offset from the written servo information while reading the last written servo information until the detected servo signal equals a predetermined value. Then servo information is written on the data storage media responsive to the detected servo signal equal to the predetermined value. The moving and writing steps are sequentially repeated until a second crash stop is reached. A quad-burst servo amplitude pattern or phase pattern can be used for the servo information. The servo writing method is adapted easily for many different servo options. When the file uses a hybrid servo or sector servo, the other surfaces can be written by duplicating the servo bursts with a high bandwidth servo system of the file.

  • Patent number: 5828522
Abstract: In a disk drive in which a head disk assembly includes a slider suspension member and a parking ramp on which the suspension member rests when the disk drive is not operating, stiction forces between the suspension member and the parking ramp are overcome by applying simultaneously to the suspension member a dither in the form of rocking micromotion, and a bias force to move the suspension member at a low velocity required for loading a slider onto a disk without damage to the slider/disk interface.

  • Patent number: 5821549
Abstract: Methods are provided for exposing a selected feature of an IC device, such as a selected conductor, from the back side of the substrate without disturbing adjacent features of the device, such as active regions. One such method comprises: (a) determining a region of the IC device in which the selected feature is located; (b) acquiring from the back side of the substrate an IR optical microscope image of the region; (c) aligning the IR optical microscope image with a coordinate system of a milling system; and (d) using structures visible in the IR optical microscope image as a guide, operating the milling system to expose the selected feature from the back side of the IC device without disturbing adjacent features.

  • Patent number: 5682274
Abstract: An apparatus and method for correcting for track misregistration when a slider or head assembly contains a separate read element and write element. The offset is determined at a first position and at a second position of the actuator arm assembly. From these offsets a constant and a multiplier are determined for determining an offset as a function of the cylinder location. Also disclosed is a method and apparatus for minimizing distance traveled to prevent misregistration when repositioning between the read element and a write element. The read element is intentionally offset from the write element at an angle so as to minimize the distance traveled across the disk.

  • Patent number: 5352143
Abstract: A system and method for automatically evacuating and filling neon tubing is disclosed wherein an electrical controller is provided to automatically control the evacuation and fill cycles. For this purpose, pneumatic actuator valves are utilized in the manifold system to selectively control the flow functions in the process during the evacuation and fill cycles. A bombarder signal is delivered to a bombarder unit by the controller, which generates electrical current through the electrodes of the tubing being processed to heat the tubing. A pressure gauge is placed in the manifold system to sense tube pressure and generate an electrical pressure signal which is transmitted to the electronic controller. A temperature sensor is placed in temperature sensing relation with the tubing to sense the temperature of the tubing and generate an electrical temperature signal also transmitted to the controller.

  • Patent number: 4006372
Abstract: Positioning apparatus for moving read-write transducers in data record systems achieves improved stability in the motion and positioning of such transducers with reduced complexity of structure compared with known apparatus of the prior art. A particular structure, including a female dovetail guide surface and a plurality of cooperating sloped guide wheels, one of which is spring-loaded for force balancing, causes a plurality of reference guide wheels to maintain firm and stable contact with a smooth and flat reference surface and assures the desired stable and accurate movement of the carriage.

  • Patent number: 3970527
Abstract: This invention relates to a method of electroforming the epitrochoidal running track for the rotor of a rotary internal combustion engine. The method involves the electrodeposition of a sequence of plates on a mandrel of epitrochoidal shape and having a chromium surface, and casting an aluminum alloy housing onto the final plate. The sequence of plates applied to the mandrel with the chromium surface involving (1) a first plate of poor adherence selected from the group consisting essentially of nickel, cobalt, iron or their alloys, (2) a wear-resistant plate and (3) a final plate to aid in securing good adhesion of the aluminum housing cast thereon. These are the main steps. Intermediate steps may also be involved such as using two or more wear-resistant plates in step (2). Also step (1) with step (2) can be combined in one plating step.

  • Patent number: 3953094
Abstract: Apparatus for receiving and driving magnetic disc cartridges as peripheral computer memory units. Particular mechanisms are included which render the apparatus more effective and more compact than previously known corresponding devices of a comparable nature. These mechanisms cooperate to provide means for permitting the apparatus to be withdrawn partially from its mounting rack and for moving an interfering panel member out of the way to permit loading and unloading of the disc cartridge from the top of the apparatus. The mechanisms include releasable latching means and a solenoid controlled lock for preventing release of the latching means except under predetermined positions, plus means for pivoting a lid member to avoid interference with adjacent equipment.
