    Abstract: Flame-retarded foamable styrene-based resin beads and a process for producing the resin beads are provided in which a combination of two organic bromine-containing compounds is used in order to accomplish a high flame retardancy level with a small amount of addition and decreased level of residual monomer. The flame-retarded foamable resin beads comprises a blowing agent added to resin beads by impregnating with the blowing agent during or after polymerization. The beads are produced by suspension polymerizing a monomer composition containing 0.5 to 5.0 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the monomer of a bromine-containing flame retardant comprising (a) an organic bromine-containing compound having 2,3-dibromo-2-alkylpropyl group and (b) an organic bromine-containing compound having a bromine content greater than 50 wt % and free of any bromine atom attached to a tertiary carbon atom.

The composition comprises 100 parts by weight of a styrene resin, 0.5 to 10 parts by weight of a brominated flame-retarder which has a bromine content of 60% by weight or higher, and 0.005 to 0.5 part by weight of urea, thiourea or an N-substituted derivative thereof. By using an urea compound concomitantly, the amount of the brominated flame-retarder required for achieving a desired flame retardancy level can be reduced.

    Abstract: A brominated polyphenylene oxide having a molecular skeleton obtained by condensing tribromophenols and satisfying the requirements: (A) its 20 wt. % solution in chloroform has an absorbance at 600 nm of not larger than 0.6; (B) when 50 ml of ion-exchanged water is added to its 1.00 g/30 ml solution in dioxane, the resulting solution has an electroconductivity of not larger than 10 ?S/cm measured at 25° C.; and (C) when a mixture comprised of 20% by weight of the brominated polyphenylene oxide and 80% by weight of triphenyl phosphate is heated at 280° C. for 20 minutes, the halide ion increase therein is not larger than 10 ?mols per gram of the brominated polyphenylene oxide, is used as a flame retardant. When it is added to resin, the resin moldings are excellent in its flame retardancy, electric properties, physical properties, thermal stability and appearance (color hue), and they do not corrode molds.
