    Abstract: Outer peripheral portions of magnetizing terminals 39a constituting a magnetizing apparatus 33a for magnetizing a permanent magnet 32, are made longer than inner peripheral portions. Coils 40 for magnetization are wound around the shorter length inner peripheral portions. A distance L32 between the magnetizing terminals 39a and a step portion 37 of a support ring 34 can thus be shortened, so that the axial length of the encoder 31a can be reduced. This results in reducing the axial length of an encoder 31a to thereby miniaturize and lighten a speed sensing rolling bearing unit incorporating the encoder 31a.

The single seal ring is capable of preventing the entrance of muddy water into the cover and the outer race through the first and the second clearance.

    Abstract: An inserting portion of a holding case holding a sensor is inserted in a fitting hole formed in the cylindrical wall portion of the cover. The hold-down frame portion of a hold-down member pivoted to the cylindrical wall portion is used to press the base portion of the holding case against the outer peripheral face of the cylindrical wall portion. The contact area between the base portion and the cylindrical wall portion is shut with an O-ring, so that any extraneous matter such as rainwater is prevented from penetrating into the cover. Also, a pair of elastic retaining pieces are provided for a plastic material which embeds a sensor. A pair of retaining projections are provided on the outer peripheral edge of a collar portion formed in the leading end portion of a cylindrical holding portion provided for a cover.

The sensor comprises a pair of annular or cylindrical permanent magnets arranged concentric with the tone wheel, an annular or cylindrical stator of magnetic material magnetically connected with the permanent magnets and provided concentric with the tone wheel, and an annular or cylindrical coil provided concentric with the tone wheel and proximate a central portion of the stator. Like magnetic poles of the pair of permanent magnets are magnetically connected to opposite ends of the stator. Peripheral faces of either the magnets or ring portions of the stator are formed with alternating recesses and protrusions with the same pitch as in the cutout section of the tone wheel and facing the cutout section of the tone wheel.
