    Abstract: An culture vessel includes one or more recesses, each having a flat bottom surface, and a side surface extending upward from the peripheral edge of the bottom surface and including a rough surface with arithmetic mean roughness of 0.18 ?m to 5.0 ?m. The rough surface is water repellent and reduces meniscus formation on the peripheral edge of the upper surface of the culture solution. This suppresses a reduction in light amount at the peripheral edges of recesses due to meniscus formation. On the side surfaces of recesses, secondary illumination light is diffused and reflected. This suppresses formation of an image (ghost) of a biological sample by the secondary illumination light. Accordingly, it is possible to suppress a reduction in the amount of light due to meniscus formation in the culture solution and to reduce formation of an image of the biological sample by the secondary illumination light.
