Patent number: 7373460Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide a media drive capable of improving command processing performance by, when a plurality of commands is queued, shortening seek time and rotational latency, and also effectively making use of the shortened period of time. In one embodiment, a HDD includes a queue capable of storing a plurality of commands, and a queue manager for optimizing the execution order of the plurality of commands on the basis of whether or not the execution of each command requires access to a medium. The queue manager determines the execution order so that medium access processing of accessing a disk for execution, and data transfer processing of transferring data between the HDD and a host, are executed in parallel with each other. For example, read processing and transfer processing are executed in parallel with each other. The read processing is adaptive to read out a read command, data of which does not exist in the cache, from the disk into the cache.Type: GrantFiled: November 10, 2005Date of Patent: May 13, 2008Assignee: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Hiromi Kobayashi, Hirofumi Saitoh, Takahiro Saito, Tadahisa Kawa, Atsushi Kanamaru

Patent number: 7320050Abstract: Embodiments of the invention raise the performance of a HDD by controlling the timing of notifying of command completion. In one embodiment, transmission of command completion notifications to a host is managed by a host interface manager. If two data write addresses respectively for two queued commands are adjacent or near to each other, that is, these addresses on the magnetic disk can be accessed without rotational latency, the host interface manager postpones the transmission of a command completion notification (X) concerning the first write command (X). Two command completion notifications (X) and (Y) are performed at a time after the write data (Y) for the next command is transmitted and its write to the medium is completed.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 2005Date of Patent: January 15, 2008Assignee: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Hiromi Kobayashi, Atsushi Kanamaru, Takahiro Saito

Publication number: 20060153033Abstract: Embodiments of the invention improve the cache hit ratio of read data. A hard disk drive (HDD) according to an embodiment of the present invention determines whether the read buffer should be used in its entirety or the partial continuous space should be used to read read-data from the magnetic disk. When the HDD determines use of the partial continuous space, the HDD specifies the sub-buffer which is a continuous space wherein the leading-end position and the trailing-end position are coupled to each other, and executes data writing to the sub-buffer in parallel with data reading from the sub-buffer and transmission thereof to the host. The sub-buffer capacity coincides with the data length of the back data.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 22, 2005Publication date: July 13, 2006Applicant: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Takahiro Saito, Takayuki Yamaguchi, Atsushi Kanamaru, Hiromi Kobayashi

Publication number: 20060101174Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide a media drive that is intended for reduction in power consumption required for serial communications to/from a host, and a power saving method thereof. In one embodiment, a HDD includes: a cache; a host interface for transferring, to a host, transfer data read out from the cache; a host interface manager that controls the execution of commands so as to generate a transfer unnecessary period during which a command and transfer data need not be exchanged with the host; and a MPU that brings a serial communication part of the host interface into a power save mode during the transfer unnecessary period. The host interface manager determines the optimum data transfer timing of transferring data from the cache to the host on the basis of a transfer rate at which data is transferred to the host, and a read rate at which data is read out from a disk into the cache.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 4, 2005Publication date: May 11, 2006Applicant: Hitachi Global Storage TechnologiesInventors: Atsushi Kanamaru, Tadahisa Kawa, Hiromi Kobayashi, Hirofumi Saitoh

Patent number: 6435822Abstract: In a fluid machine such as multistage centrifugal compressor, the pressure of a working fluid is raised with the rotation of a impeller. A shaft sealing device is mounted at the end of the rotary shaft in order to prevent the working gas of the raised pressure from leaking out of the fluid machine and then polluting the surroundings. In a case where the fluid machine operates to rotate at high speed, a labyrinth sealing device is employed for the purpose of reducing a frictional loss in the shaft sealing device. The labyrinth sealing device includes a plurality of stages of labyrinth fins which are formed on a casing or the rotary shaft, and a layer of abradable coating to-be-bitten which is formed in the surface part of the rotary shaft or the casing opposing to the labyrinth fins. The clearances between the labyrinth fins and the rotary shaft or the casing are made narrower on the low-pressure side of the labyrinth sealing device than on the high-pressure side thereof.Type: GrantFiled: May 25, 2001Date of Patent: August 20, 2002Assignee: Hitachi, Ltd.Inventors: Hiromi Kobayashi, Hideo Nishida, Haruo Miura, Takashi Eino, Kazuki Takahashi

Patent number: 6203275Abstract: In a multi-stage centrifugal compressor, having a plurality of impellers mounted on a rotation shaft, or a single-stage centrifugal compressor, a vaned diffuser, having a plurality of vanes, is mounted at a downstream side of the impeller, and a vaneless diffuser portion is formed downstream of this vaned diffuser. A meridian plane cross-sectional shape of each of two wall surfaces forming the vaneless diffuser portion provided downstream of the vaned diffuser is such that its channel height is decreased progressively in a downstream direction. Instead of this vaneless diffuser, there can be provided a second vaned diffuser having a small number of vanes. In this case, also, two wall surfaces, forming the second vaned diffuser, are contracted progressively in the downstream direction.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 1998Date of Patent: March 20, 2001Assignee: Hitachi, LTDInventors: Hiromi Kobayashi, Hideo Nishida, Kazuki Takahashi, Takashi Eino

Patent number: 5228832Abstract: A compressor is disclosed are disposed in which a diffuser flow passage is curved to a radial direction in the vicinity of an outlet of a mixed-flow impeller, and guide vanes are disposed in which each is of a height (projecting into the diffuser flow passage in a direction substantially transverse to the direction of flow) that is less than the meridional flow passage width such that the minimum inlet radius is larger than a maximum radius at the outlet of the mixed-flow impeller and are arranged in the form of a circular cascade at the curved portion on a flow passage surface of the diffuser plate located on a shroud side. Thus, it is possible to keep uniform the flow within the diffuser and to enhance the performance of the compressor. In addition, the axial length of the compressor may be shortened to thereby make the compressor compact in size.Type: GrantFiled: July 27, 1992Date of Patent: July 20, 1993Assignee: Hitachi, Ltd.Inventors: Hideo Nishida, Hiromi Kobayashi, Haruo Miura, Takeo Takagi

Patent number: 4938661Abstract: A multistage centrifugal compressor has a shaft rotatable on an axis and a plurality of centrifugal impellers fixed on the shaft and having outlets at outer peripheries thereof. Conduits connect the impellers to from a path for fluid undergoing multi-stage compression by the impellers from a suction side to a delivery side. The conduits including a plurality of diffusers arranged radially outwardly from the impellers, each impeller and associated diffuser constituting a stage. At least two of the diffusers are vaned diffusers provided with vanes having leading edges at their inlet ends. To provide high efficiency combined with low risk of rotating stalls, among the vaned diffusers, the ratio of diffuser vane leading edge radius to impeller outlet radius increases along the fluid path from the delivery of the compressor to the suction side.Type: GrantFiled: September 8, 1989Date of Patent: July 3, 1990Assignee: Hitachi, Ltd.Inventors: Hiromi Kobayashi, Hideo Nishida, Haruo Miura
