  • Patent number: 6181521
Abstract: In order to prevent an occurrence of troubles such as abnormal wear, a self-excited vibration and a forced vibration caused by a friction force in a contact type magnetic head slider, a load beam, which is supported on a proximal end thereof by an actuator, at a distal end of which a magnetic head slider mounting a magnetic head is fixed, and which is for bringing the magnetic head slider into contact with a recording surface of a rotating magnetic disk by a desired load, is curved convexly on the side of the magnetic disk when an assembly is completed. Thus, a center of rotation in a slider pitch direction due to a friction force between the magnetic head slider and the magnetic disk can be positioned below the recording surface of the magnetic disk.

  • Patent number: 6157519
Abstract: A magnetic disk unit includes a magnetic disk attached to a spindle so as to be rotatable, a slider having a magnetic head for reading/writing data onto/from the magnetic disk, a suspension for providing the slider with a predetermined load, and an actuator arm for positioning the slider attached to the suspension on the magnetic disk. A first pad including the magnetic head and second pads including no magnetic heads are disposed on an air bearing surface of the slider. During rotation of said magnetic disk, a part of the first pad keeps in contact with the magnetic disk. A load point of the suspension with respect to the slider is positioned between a leading edge of the slider and a position located at a distance equivalent to substantially 0.42 times a whole length of the slider from the leading edge of the slider.

  • Patent number: 5862017
Abstract: In a head suspension, a gimbal spring is constituted by a flexible sheet having an electrical circuit formed on its surface, and a through hole is formed through that portion of a load beam of metal overlapping the gimbal spring. The load beam is bonded integrally to the gimbal spring to form the head suspension. There is also disclosed a rotary disk storage unit incorporating such a head suspension.

  • Patent number: 5835305
Abstract: A magnetic storage apparatus includes a substantially non-flexible magnetic recording medium, a magnetic head slider having a reading/writing element mounted therein and liquid lubricant provided on the surface of the magnetic recording medium. The liquid lubricant is a liquid in a Newtonian range having a viscosity which is substantially constant irrespective of a shear rate or a liquid having the property that the actual viscosity is increased with increase of the shear rate. The magnetic head slider maintains a gap between the slider and the magnetic recording medium to perform reading and writing while being moved on the liquid lubricant intermittently or continuously in a contact manner with the liquid lubricant. There is provided a device for maintaining a constant flying height even if a movement speed is varied, which flying height is represented by the size of the gap.

  • Patent number: 5659448
Abstract: A magnetic head supporting mechanism includes a slider fixed to a slider spacer which is in turn fixed to a gimbal via a single area which is smaller than a contact area between the slider spacer and the gimbal so that the variation in the flying height of the slider is reduced and the positioning error due to the positional shifting of the head is also reduced. With this arrangement, it is possible to achieve a high-capacity magnetic disk storage device capable of operating at a high speed.

  • Patent number: 5519552
Abstract: In a head suspension, a gimbal spring is constituted by a flexible sheet having an electrical circuit formed on its surface, and a through hole is formed through that portion of a metal load beam overlying the gimbal spring. The load beam is bonded integrally to the gimbal spring to form the head suspension. There is also disclosed a rotary disk storage unit incorporating such a head suspension.

  • Patent number: 5430591
Abstract: A flying head slider utilizing a negative pressure according to the invention has a front end, a rear end, and an air bearing surface directed to face a rotating recording medium. The air bearing surface includes a pair of side rails extending on both sides of the air bearing surface from the front end in the longitudinal direction of the slider, a center rail provided at the center of the air bearing surface in the transverse direction and extending from the front end to the rear end in the longitudinal direction of the slider, a cross rail extending in the transverse direction of the slider to connect the pair of side rails and the center rail to each other near the front end, a pair of recesses defined by the pair of side rails, the center rail and the cross rail, communicating grooves for communicating the pair of recesses with the front end, and a head mounted on a rear end surface of the center rail. The pair of side rails, the center rail and the cross rail lie substantially in the same plane.

  • Patent number: 5258047
Abstract: A device for holding an object by electrostatic force includes a body made of a dielectric of a low resistivity, such as SiC, and an electrode provided on that surface of the device body facing away from a holder surface, so that a potential difference is produced between the object and the holder surface. A change-over switch for grounding the device body to an earth potential of an ambient environment is provided, so that the dielectric can be rapidly brought into a potential equal to the earth potential.

  • Patent number: 5077888
Abstract: A device for mounting magnetic discs on a spindle of a magnetic disc file assembly has a disc transfer mechanism provided with a disc supporting surface operative to support a disc in non-contacting and relatively movable relationship with a fluid film formed therebetween. The thus supported disc is axialy aligned, by a positioning mechanism, with the spindle and then released into engagement with the spindle. The floating support of the disc allows the disc to be moved relative to the disc supporting surface first into alignment and then into engagement with the spindle without any mechanical contact and friction between the disc supporting surface and the disc to thereby prevent the production of dusty material otherwise produced by mechanical contact between the disc and the supporting surface.

  • Patent number: 4630942
Abstract: A guiding apparatus having a slider supported in a floating manner above a base by means of hydrostatic bearings, a pressurized fluid supplying means for supplying the hydrostatic bearings with a pressurized fluid, and detecting means for detecting the displacement of the slider with respect to a designated coordinate. The pressure of the pressurized fluid from the pressurized fluid supplying means is adjusted in accordance with a signal which is obtained as a result of the comparison between the value representing the reference position of the slider with respect to the base and the value actually measured by the detecting means, thereby adjusting the sizes of the gaps for forming hydrostatic fluid film for the hydrostatic bearings, thereby to correct the position of the slider to the designated position. With this arrangement, the absolute position of the slider is precisely determined without being affected by disturbance factors such as the precision of assembling of the base and the slider.
