  • Patent number: 5805385
Abstract: A magnetic disk device has a spindle shaft rotatably supported by bearings, a plurality of magnetic disks directly mounted on an outer peripheral side of the spindle shaft and being stacked in an axial direction of the spindle shaft, a plurality of spacer rings directly mounted on the outer peripheral side of the spindle shaft and respectively interposed between the plurality of magnetic disks, and a clamp ring mounted on the top of the spindle shaft for tightly fixing the plurality of magnetic disks and the plurality of spacer rings to the spindle shaft. The device also has a center shaft provided with inner race members which are in contact with inner peripheral surfaces of bearings, an arm holder including a cylinder member formed in a center portion thereof and arm members connected at one end portion to magnetic heads corresponding to respective magnetic disks and at another end portion to the outer peripheral side of the cylinder member.

  • Patent number: 5745326
Abstract: A magnetic disk drive capable of reducing the influence of a tension ascribable to the forming of a flexible printed circuit (FPC), which transfers the output signal of a magnetic head, on a carriage. The curved configuration and arrangement of the FPC are changed to minimize the tension ascribable to the FPC even when the carriage seeks the inner or outer peripheral portion of a magnetic disk.

  • Patent number: 5629820
Abstract: A magnetic disk drive is disclosed which has head sliders constituting a magnetic head and pressed against magnetic disks which are rotatable at high speed. The head sliders are made up of data head sliders for writing and reading data out of the disks and servo head sliders for positioning the data head sliders. The head sliders are each affixed to a gimbal spring which is in turn affixed to a load spring. Each load spring is directly affixed to the spacers at the other end thereof. The spacers are made of the same material as the load springs or made of at least two different materials.

  • Patent number: 5624584
Abstract: A process for reducing deformation of a holder arm, which holds a head of a data recording device, includes cutting a metal body to form the holder arm and contouring a tip of the holder arm by wire cutting. The step of contouring preferably includes steps of placing a voltage between the metal body and a wire, moving the wire, and bringing the wire adjacent the metal body to contour the tip of the holder arm.

  • Patent number: 5523912
Abstract: An arm assembly has a front end portion on which a plurality of magnetic heads opposed to a plurality of magnetic disk media, respectively, for writing/reading information are mounted, a rear end portion having a C shaped arm formed with a pair of holes or recesses having a predetermined depth and a center portion rotatably supported by a rotational shaft through bearings. A coil is fixedly secured to an inside surface of the C shaped arm through an adhesive for driving the arm assembly. A permanent magnet assembly is disposed in a location opposing the coil and constituting a magnetic circuit together with the coil. A pair of stoppers are provided on opposite sides of the C shaped arm with predetermined spaces and adapted to restrict a rotational movement of the C shaped arm by contacting with collision surfaces of the C shaped arm. The holes or the recesses of the C shaped arm may be filled with elastic material having superior vibration attenuating characteristics.

  • Patent number: 5469316
Abstract: In a magnetic disk apparatus, a head driving device has a permanent magnet assembly and an arm assembly. The permanent magnet assembly has a pair of permanent magnets whose different polarities face each other with the intermediary of a pair of support members. In the arm assembly, an arm carries a magnetic head on one end and a coil on the other end. A coil is inserted between the opposite polarities of the magnets, so that the arm assembly is rotated by the Lorentz force generated in the coil. The range over which the arm assembly is rotatable is determined by the support members against which the arm assembly selectively abut. At least one of the support members is formed with a recess or groove for receiving part of the arm assembly when the assembly is rotated. Hence, despite that the support member has a substantial thickness, the movable range of the arm assembly is the same as when the support member has a small thickness.

  • Patent number: 5463515
Abstract: The magnetic disk unit has a cylindrical sleeve disposed between a plurality of bearings and an arm holder for magnetic heads rotatably supported by a head rotating shaft disposed in parallel with a disk rotating shaft for magnetic disks via the bearings. This sleeve forms a gap with the inner periphery of the arm holder to absorb a difference of thermal distortion in the radial direction of the arm holder and the bearings. Thus, thermal offtrack characteristics can be improved significantly.

  • Patent number: 4988903
Abstract: A coil assembly for use in a voice coil motor has a pair of coils. A pair of coil frames made of metallic material have each a cavity for receiving therein each coil adhered and fixed in the cavity. The pair of coil frames have respective opposed peripheral portions surrounding the cavity and being adhered and fixed to each other to seal the coils. At least one of the coil frames has at its central portion an airhole. A filter and activated carbon are interposed between the airhole and the coils.
