  • Patent number: 6632570
Abstract: A fibrous-structure electrode plate has a metal thickness which increases continuously towards the current discharge lug and the resultant low-loss current carrying. To produce the fibrous-structure electrode framework plates according to the invention, textile substrate can be reinforced by electrodeposition. For the subsequent use of the textile substrate which has been reinforced by electrodeposition as an electrode framework of fibrous structure, a diaphragm system is introduced into the electrodeposition bath between each anode and the premetallized web of a textile substrate which is to be reinforced by electrodeposition. In this way, it is possible to distribute the metal applied to the substrate, specifically without previously cutting the web to size.

  • Patent number: 6428674
Abstract: A process for the removal of galvanic electrolytic residues from galvanically reinforced fiber structure frames, where the fiber structure frame is produced through chemical metallization of a textile substrate based on fleeces or felts made of synthetic fibers and then through galvanic reinforcement of the metallized textile substrate in a galvanic bath containing a galvanic electrolyte. The invention provides that the galvanic electrolytic residues are removed by suction from the fiber structure frame. The fiber structure frame then makes contact at least once under high pressure with the wash liquid in a wash station, and subsequently the wash liquid is removed by suction from the fiber structure frame. In order to remove by suction, the galvanic electrolytic residues or the wash liquid, a belt-shaped porous supporting device is inserted between the suction port and a main area of the fiber structure frame.

  • Patent number: 6013320
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the continuous chemical metallizing of porous substrates in a wet-chemical manner. According to the invention, the different reaction rates of the adsorption or ionic reduction reaction, in the case of activating with Pd/Sn, are adapted to the chemical metallizing reaction used. The removal of the spent process solutions from the pores of the substrate takes place by suction. The invention permits a continuous implementation of the process of depositing a metal layer on an electrically non-conductive, synthetic substrate, which can be used at the start of a galvanic reinforcing process of the chemically deposited metal coating.

  • Patent number: 5789097
Abstract: A gas-tight maintenance-free cell or battery comprises positive nickel oxide electrodes having a fibrous structure, gas-impermeable separators, a fixed alkaline electrolyte, negative metal electrodes having a fibrous structure and a higher charging and discharging capacity than in the case of the positive electrodes, and electroconductive gas diffusion compartments. The cell operating according to the oxygen cycle. The metallized fibrous-structure electrode frameworks of the negative electrodes are filled with the active material only in certain zones. Those zones of the fibrous-structure electrode frameworks of the negative electrode which are not filled with the active material, serve as gas diffusion zones, integrated into the frameworks, for the oxygen to be discharged at the negative electrode.

  • Patent number: 5595787
Abstract: A chemical metallization process is used for electrically non-conducting porous substrates, in needle felts, nonwovens or open-pored foams which possesses a porosity of from 40 to 97%. The metallization follows activation of the fiber surfaces or of the surfaces of the pore walls with a noble metal-containing solution. The volume of the chemical metallizing solution used is reduced to produce a considerable reduction in the operating costs, not only in respect of the solution itself but also in respect of the disposal of the waste water from the chemical metallization. Since less waste water is produced from the start in the chemical metallization process, a considerable contribution to the protection of the environment results.

  • Patent number: 5591053
Abstract: A battery current tapping vane is welded to a connecting strap at its one end region. The vane has weld burls and is bent over transversely to the flat side of the remaining current tapping vane. To improve the welding process and to reduce waste, the weld burls are produced in full bodied version at least in the bent end region which is provided on both sides with recesses or reduced thickness portions. The depth of the recesses or portion is greater than the amount of settlement in the course of welding on. The weld burls are alternatively formed by material archings with sides projecting transversely from the bent end region of the current tapping vane and merge into the current tapping vane, with a radius of curvature corresponding to no greater than twice the wall thickness of the current tapping vane.

  • Patent number: 5482738
Abstract: A wet-chemical metallization process is used for electrically non-conductive, previously chemically activated plastic substrate sheets. After metallization, the metallizing solution is separated from the substrate sheet by the influence of gravity or centrifugal force, and the sheet is rinsed with rinsing water. The metallizing solution and the rinsing water are each collected separately and subjected to a treatment for the purpose of reuse. To this end, the metallizing solution is distilled and reused as rinsing water. The rinsing water is worked up into a reusable metallizing solution by the addition of chemical metallizing components, thereby saving costs for make-up water (i.e. distilled water) and reducing pollution of the environment by contaminated effluents.

  • Patent number: 5424149
Abstract: An electrochemical storage device which has electrode plates of different polarity which are alternately stacked on one another to form an electrode stack. Each of the electrode plates is formed from an electrode framework with a current-collecting lug arranged thereon. Identically polarized current-collecting lugs of an electrode stack are connected in an electrically conductive fashion to a terminal yoke. In order to ensure better welding, the terminal yoke has at the location of the current-collecting lugs a transverse slot into which the free end region of a current-collecting lug projects. The current-collecting lug is attached to the terminal yoke on the flat side that is remote from the electrode stack.

  • Patent number: 5397659
Abstract: An electrochemical storage device and a process for making the same has electrode plates of differing polarity which are stacked one upon the other. Each one of the electrode plates exhibits a metallized electrode structure and a current tapping vane which is resistant to bending and which is electrically conductively secured to a welding margin of the electrode structure. The same-polarity current tapping vanes of the electrode plates are electrically connected to a connecting strap extending parallel to the electrode plate stack and within the storage device housing. In order that, inter alia, the service life of the electrochemical storage device should be increased, the current tapping vanes disposed at the electrode structures are permanently shaped in accordance with their installation position essentially only outside the welding margin, in such a manner that in the installed condition they are free from mechanical stresses in the region of the welding margin onto the electrode structure.

  • Patent number: 5182241
Abstract: A process treats the waste water which accumulates as used activation solution in the one-step activation, on the basis of acidic palladium/tin solutions, of large-surface plastic substrates, in particular of non-woven fabric, needled felt or open-pored foam sheets, for the purpose of a subsequent chemical metallization. A concentrate composed of palladium chloride and sodium chloride and then a solid tin salt in a molar ratio of 1:1.5 to 1:4, based on the palladium, is added to the waste water. After a certain maturing time, a ready-to-use activation solution is again obtained for activating a plastic substrate and reduces the amount of the waste water hitherto accumulating after the activation has taken place.

  • Patent number: 5163974
Abstract: A process manufacturing positive and negative fiber structure electrodes for open as well as gastight electrochemical current sources, particularly nickel-cadmium accumulators. After the filling of the calibrated plate with an active mass and the subsequent drying of the plate filled with a moist a mass, the plate is calibrated again by means of calibrating presses or calibrating rollers. The calibrating plates or rollers are cleaned to remove adhering or deposited active mass or other dirt by means of ductors or rotating brush rollers while being at the same time subjected to suction. Thus electrodes are created which have plane surfaces for cells for the highest standards with respect to the individual active components and the mounted stack in the given dimensions.

  • Patent number: 5094774
Abstract: An aqueous nickel hydroxide paste for the mechanical impregnation of fibrous-structure electrode frameworks. The polydisperse solid total system of solid particles in the nickel hydroxide or hydrated nickel oxide paste has a particular particle-size distribution (distribution ogive) which may vary within narrow limits and is preferably evaluated in a RRSB particle-size grid according to P. Rosin, E. Rammler, K. Sperling and I. G. Bennett. The resulting paste can be filled into differing frameworks in one operation, as a moist active mass (paste), to a degree of filling of 94% to 100%, without constituents of the paste (particularly at the lower edge during handling in the vertical position) draining off or escaping again. Preferably, the choice of the particle-size distribution of the nickel hydroxide powder used is so fine that the technical comminution work in the production of the paste is very small and that the production times for the paste can consequently be substantially reduced.

  • Patent number: 5085956
Abstract: A fiber-structure electrode support of metallized synthetic fibers with reinforced border and with welded-on, thin current discharge lug is produced by a method in which, after the welding operation, the previously straight current discharge lug having a rectangular cross-section is impressed in a first zone in parallel and strongly into the fiber-structure electrode support. This region is adjoined by a second zone, where the current discharge lug rises at an inclination of 10.degree. to 30.degree. with respect to the first zone running parallel to the lower side of the fiber-structure electrode support, so that the border of the current discharge lug runs out in three directions to the right, downwards and to the left, starting from the surface of the current discharge lug which overlaps the fiber-structure electrode support, in a gradual trasition. At this border 20% to 30% of the current discharge lug is pressed into the fiber-structure electrode support and welded.
