  • Publication number: 20180279246
Abstract: Systems and associated methods for reducing Doppler shifts in the broadband signals between Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and ground stations are disclosed herein. In one embodiment, a method for reducing the Doppler shift of wireless signals includes estimating a velocity of the UAV based on a Global Positioning System (GPS) or an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) of the UAV and calculating the Doppler shift of an upload (UL) wireless signal based on the velocity of the UAV. The method further includes predistorting a frequency of the UL wireless signal at the ground station to reduce the Doppler shift at a UAV receiver (RX) and transmitting the UL wireless signal from a ground station transmitter (TX) to the UAV RX. In some embodiments, calculating the Doppler shift of the UL wireless signal is performed at the ground station.

  • Patent number: 9998157
Abstract: Systems and methods are presented for increasing throughput between mobile transmitters/receivers (e.g., between an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle and a ground station) using orthogonally polarized transmission channels. The system may first calibrate the receiver and transmitter antenna pairs using pilot signals and then may update look up tables for feedforward correction. The system may decouple and predict the cross polarization interference due to relative dynamic movement between the transmitter and the receiver. The system may perform a closed-loop suboptimal estimation to generate refined corrections by minimizing a difference between a training vector and a pilot-signal feedback. Cross-polarization discrimination between the transmission and reception antennas may then be Cancelled to improve signal to noise and interference ratio and performance of the system.

  • Patent number: 9952307
Abstract: A combined electro-mechanical adaptive antenna tracking system for wireless communication between transmitters and receivers moving relative to each other is described. This system enables one or more antenna transceivers on a moving object, such as a high altitude unmanned aerial vehicle (HALE UAV), to simultaneously track one or more separate antenna transceivers on the ground, such as multiple customer premises equipment. The antennas on the moving object are constructed with multiple-subsection phased arrays or may have multiple horns on one rotation axis. Adaptive tracking control logic is applied to synchronize electrical switch and/or mechanical rotation and electrical beamforming for the moving transceivers to track multiple ground transceivers. In one advantageous aspect, an off-the-shelf horn antenna can be used and rotated around only one axis, thereby eliminating the need for expensive two dimensional movement actuators such as gimbals and the need for tracking multiple ground based receivers.

  • Patent number: 9812710
Abstract: The present invention related to an electrochemical cell comprising an anode of a Group IA metal and a cathode of a composite material prepared from a combination of vanadium oxide and either a copper or a silver oxide and the other of a copper or a silver nitrate. The cathode material of the present invention provides an increased gravimetric energy density over the cathode active materials of the prior art along with an increased pulse voltage delivery capacity. This makes the cathode material of the present invention particularly useful for implantable medical applications.

  • Patent number: 9231256
Abstract: The traditional method of pressing CFx, screen and SVO sheet assembly results in an electrode that is cupped and not flat. This results in the reduction of the effective volumetric energy density of the electrode or the addition of a process step of flattening of the cathode if at all possible. The new method of assembly effectively eliminates the cupping behavior and produces a flat electrode. In addition, the physical density of the cathode is also increased.

  • Patent number: 8871379
Abstract: A new cathode design having a first cathode active material of a relatively low energy density but of a relatively high rate capability contacted to one side of a current collector and a second cathode active material having a relatively high energy density but of a relatively low rate capability contacted to the opposite side thereof is described. A preferred cathode is: SVO/current collector/CFx with the CFx facing a lithium anode body devoid of a screen-type current collector. The lithium anode is either supported directly on the inner casing sidewall or is contacted to a relatively small strip of metal devoid of perforations and serving as an anode current collector electrically connected to the negative terminal.

  • Patent number: 8685568
Abstract: The current invention describes a lithium/carbon monofluoride (Li/CFx) cell capable of delivering sufficient power to supply an ICD or similar demanding device. The cell exhibits the typical excellent long-term stability and predictability of the CFx system, as well as its high energy density (greater than about 300 Ah/cc, greater than about 600 Wh/cc). Additionally, the cell is capable of delivering about 0.5 W/cc of cathode volume for greater than 5 seconds with a voltage above 1.70 V (FIG. 1). The following invention embodiments can be applied individually or in conjunction with each other.
