  • Publication number: 20040055891
Abstract: An apparatus is provided for manipulating droplets. The apparatus is a single-sided electrode design in which all conductive elements are contained on one surface on which droplets are manipulated. An additional surface can be provided parallel with the first surface for the purpose of containing the droplets to be manipulated. Droplets are manipulated by performing electrowetting-based techniques in which electrodes contained on or embedded in the first surface are sequentially energized and de-energized in a controlled manner. The apparatus enables a number of droplet manipulation processes, including merging and mixing two droplets together, splitting a droplet into two or more droplets, sampling a continuous liquid flow by forming from the flow individually controllable droplets, and iterative binary or digital mixing of droplets to obtain a desired mixing ratio.

  • Publication number: 20040008655
Abstract: A combined CDM/TDM (code division multiplexing/time division multiplexing) transmitter and method are provided which employ fractional slot assignment by assigning fractional CDM channel gains to multiple slots for at least one packet with a goal that a sum of fractional CDM gains assigned each packet over a scheduling period meet a required threshold. In some embodiments, the transmitter is adapted to determine which users to transmit during a given slot, and to determine fractional CDM channel gains using an optimization of fractional CDM channel gain and user assignment which maximizes a number of users each of which is assigned a respective group of one or more slots with fractional CDM channel gains which sum to the required threshold for the user.

  • Patent number: 6577616
Abstract: Methods and apparatuses are provided for CDMA (code division multiple access) access availability to a large cell area, and for traffic channel establishment. A group of cell site modems are configured to look for access attempts generated in respective complete and/or sectorized circular or annular shaped areas centered at the center of the cell area, the areas collectively covering the cell area. To achieve this, each cell site modem has a local clock and the local clock within the first of the cell site modems is synchronized with a standard network time, and the local clock of each of the subsequent cell site modems is offset by a respective delay with respect to the standard network time which causes the cell site modem to search within its respective annular shaped area. A cell site modem is also made available as a traffic cell site modem and is operable to have its traffic acquisition search window centered at a location of an access attempt.

  • Publication number: 20030067899
Abstract: A forward link design is provided employing CDMA (code division multiple access) technologies in which time division multiplexing is employed between data and control information on the forward link to service multiple users per slot. Another forward link design employing CDMA (code division multiple access) technologies is provided in which code division multiplexing between data and control information is employed on the forward link to service multiple users per slot, which is preferably backwards compatible with legacy standards such as IS2000A. A reverse link design is also provided.

  • Publication number: 20020071403
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and system for performing a handoff in a wireless communication system including receiving a communications signal from a mobile unit. The communications signal includes a phase offset from a pilot signal from one of the neighboring base station transceivers. A handoff process to one of the neighboring base station transceivers is then initiated and an ambiguity is detected by determining whether the phase offset from the pilot signal is in two neighbor search windows for two neighboring base station transceivers. If the ambiguity is detected, the search window for an active set of neighboring base station transceivers is widened so that the mobile unit can identify the pilot signal with the correct base station transceiver. If the ambiguity is detected, the hand off process is paused until the mobile unit can analyze all of the pilot signals from the neighboring base stations.

  • Publication number: 20020067701
Abstract: Various embodiments of the invention provide an advanced access channel through which wireless terminals can access an access network. Other embodiments provide a method of performing power control using a shared power control channel. The shared power control channel is also used in conjunction with the advanced access channel to provide an acknowledgement mechanism.
