  • Publication number: 20140036876
Abstract: Techniques for facilitating device-to-device (D2D) communications using a high efficiency distributed channel access scheme are generally described herein. In some examples, a communication zone allocated for wireless D2D communications is divided into resource contention and scheduled transmission portions. The resource contention segment may be used to transmit a request message from a transmitting device to a receiving device (a request-to-send message), and transmit a response to the request message from the receiving device to the transmitting device (a clear-to-send message). The response can indicate a time for the data transmission to occur during the scheduled transmission segment. During the scheduled transmission segment, the scheduled data transmission and other D2D data transmissions among the various devices will be performed. In further examples, contention access techniques may be used during the resource contention segment to manage access to the resource channel.

  • Patent number: 8630229
Abstract: Embodiments of a base station and method for reducing asynchronous interference in a multi-tier OFDMA overlay network are generally described herein. In some embodiments, a lower-tier base station is configured to adjust OFDMA frame boundaries to cause frames communicated by a higher-tier to arrive within a cyclic prefix at the lower-tier base station. The lower-tier base station may also be configured to adjust OFDMA frame boundaries to cause frames communicated by a lower-tier of the network to arrive within a cyclic prefix at a higher-tier mobile station. Accordingly, frames from one tier may arrive within the cyclic prefix of another thereby reducing asynchronous interference.

  • Publication number: 20140010187
Abstract: Briefly, in accordance with one or more embodiments, a base station schedules resources for one or more machine-to-machine devices in one or more machine-to-machine groups for a periodic duration persistently. The base station allocates resource blocks for the one or more devices within the scheduled resources, and then receives data packets transmitted from the one or more devices in the allocated resource blocks. The base station may pre-allocate a control channel to be used by the one or more devices during an idle mode for a periodic duration. Uplink synchronization may be performed if one or more of the devices wakes from the idle mode, and the base station may receive data from one or more of the devices in the pre-allocated control channel.

  • Publication number: 20130336223
Abstract: Systems and methods for establishing power saving data transmissions with machine-to-machine (M2M) communication capable devices and like user equipment in wireless networks are generally disclosed herein. One embodiment includes data transmission techniques to bundle small M2M data packet transmissions in an initial wireless network access process, performed before the device begins to negotiate the wireless network connection with a base station (BS). If the M2M data is successfully transmitted to the BS in the initial communication(s), then further connection does not need to occur, saving power and transmissions needed to negotiate and establish the wireless network connection. Configurations for a system, base station, and user equipment (user equipment including various M2M communication capable devices) are also described herein, including configurations for implementing the data transmission techniques.

  • Publication number: 20130301438
Abstract: An apparatus and method that allow user equipment (UE) to transmit information directly with other user equipment, using a device-to-device (D2D) mode is disclosed herein. A first D2D UE (dUE1) that wishes so communicate to a second D2D UE (dUE2) in D2D mode makes various communications requests to an Evolved Node B (eNB), which can facilitate the connection between the dUE1 and the dUE2. Among these requests are to make the D2D connection via WiFi instead of via Long Term Evolution (LTE). The eNB determines the WiFi capabilities of dUE1 and dUE2, then assigns a subset of available channels to be scanned by dUE1 and a separate subset of available channels to be scanned by dUE2. Thereafter, the eNB can assign a WiFi channel based on the scans performed by dUE1 and dUE2.
