Abstract: A runner fastening device is provided for holding a runner of an umbrella at an upper position relative to a central shaft unit, and includes a spring catch having a retaining region and an actuated region, a retained member moved with the runner and having a retained slot which extends to terminate at an abutment wall to abut against the retaining region at the upper position, and a sleeve member movably surrounding the retained member. By mating engagement between cammed and camming surfaces of the retained member and the sleeve member, when the sleeve member is moved downwardly, the actuated region is pressed against a biasing action to retreat inwardly to sweep the retaining region away from the abutment wall to thereby permit downward movement of the runner.

A tension spring body coupled to a second pull cord is stretchable to acquire an urging force. The stretched tension spring body enables an upward movement of the runner for spreading the umbrella. Once the urging force is released, a downward movement of the runner causes collapse of the umbrella and disengagement of a spring-biased shaft-retaining member from the shaft, thereby permitting folding of the shaft and closing the umbrella.

A front edge of the upper layer umbrella cover is fix-mounted on the upper rib-mounting nest of umbrella, and its lower edge is mounted on the circular ring of the long skeleton by the silk wire. The front edge in the lower layer of umbrella cover is mounted on the circular ring of the short skeleton by the silk wire, and its lower edge is mounted on the ball tail of the last folded rib by the silk wire. The upper and lower layers of umbrella cover can be linked by this independent sleeve-set method without the need of change in original elements of the umbrella rib.

An extended end is formed on the joint to receive the inner end of the second rib to increase the strength for resist against wind. A reinforced rib connects its inner end with middle portion of the first rib and extends its outer end into the joint that prevents the joint from being twisted and broken.

Abstract: The invention relates to a collapsed umbrella with shrunk volume, which is provided with a joint having wide base for pivoting with second rib and third rib counted from outside respectively. As the second rib and the third rib are positioned in collision, they can be received side by side without collocate when the umbrella is closed. Hence the collapsed umbrella will be shrunk effectively when it is closed.
