    Abstract: A modulator formed with a solid state electro-optic material having a pixellated structure interconnected to a circuit on a semiconductor substrate. Silicon CMOS integrated circuit that can include random access memories (RAMs) are used as a substrate and interfaced to solid state electro-optic materials coated thereon. In particular, the electro-optic modulators are controlled by RAM cells to produce a modulation of reflected light. SRAMs can be used with connection to the SRAM cell flip-flop. DRAMs can be used with the modulator replacing the DRAM storage capacitor. The SLM thus formed can be connected to a digital computer and controlled as if were a being written to as a memory, but other IC structures can also be used. In order to enhance the modulation effects, the electro-optic material is used as the spacer for a Fabry-Perot etalon structure that is also deposited on the semiconductor substrate. PLZT is a suitable electro-optic material.

    Abstract: A disk drive mounting assembly includes a chassis (16), a first receiving cage (20), a mounting bracket (50) and a second receiving cage (60). The disk drive (10) comprises two pairs of sliding posts (12). The first cage for receiving the disk drive is generally U-shaped and has two side walls (23, 24). Each side wall defines a pair of slots (26, 32) for accommodating the sliding posts of the disk drive. The mounting bracket (50) pivotably attached to the first cage includes a pressing body (52) and a pair of fixing arms (54) depending from the pressing body. Each fixing arm defines a fixing cutout (56) for restraining the sliding posts. The second cage is attached to the chassis on the mounting bracket to prevent the disk drive from moving in vertical directions.

A time period T is defined in which cellular operational measurement information such as traffic information and mobility information are collected. Channels that are available for allocation are collected and maintained in a matrix. The predicted number of channels are calculated based on the operational measurement information. Using the channels available for allocation and the predicted number of channels, channels are allocated for use. As the operational measurement information changes the time period T is adjusted to accommodate the changes in traffic or mobility within the cellular system.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for filtering an optical input is disclosed. In an illustrative embodiment, an optical input is split into polarization components along separate paths. The polarization components are then fed into a first electro-optic device that includes a set of electrodes across which a voltage is applied to adjust a wavelength transmission characteristic of the device. A section of the first device positioned between the electrodes preferably has a birefringence that is adjusted depending on the voltage applied across the electrodes. The adjusted components of the optical input are thereafter combined to produce an optical output. Accordingly, the optical input can be attenuated based on the voltage applied to electrodes of the first electro-optic device.

    Abstract: A ferroelectric layer is deposited or in close proximity to a ferromagnetic ferrite layer to make a microwave substrate on which conductors can be deposited or placed to make devices. The permittivity of the ferroelectric layer can be changed by applying a voltage and the permeability of the ferromagnetic layer can be changed with a magnetic field. This makes it possible to tune the device characteristics with two different effects taking best advantage of the capabilities of each. A material example is ferromagnetic yttrium-iron-garnet on which is deposited a thin film of ferroelectric barium strontium titanate. To minimize losses, the ferroelectric film should be high quality, but practical yttrium-iron-garnet substrates are polycrystalline so that the use of buffer layers is desirable. At least two methods can be used to deposit the ferroelectric film, pulsed laser deposition and metal-organic chemical liquid deposition.

A normally-off version with low polarization mode dispersion is obtained by changing the orientation of the recombiner. A normally-on version with low polarization mode dispersion is obtained with a passive polarization direction rotator. Similar results can be obtained in a reflection mode where the input and output are on the same side of the modulator. Versions using a GRIN lens are particularly suited to modulation of light out of and back into fiber-optic cables.

    Abstract: The invention provides a fiber-optic 2×2 switch using a dual-fiber 50:50 input coupler and a dual-fiber 50:50 output coupler. One fiber from each coupler makes contact to an inner transparent electrode on a planar layer of electro-optic material and the other fibers make contact to an outer transparent electrode on the layer. The electro-optic layer has its other side coated with a transparent electrode which is placed in optical contact with one end of a GRIN lens. The fibers are arranged so that the inner fibers are at conjugate points and the outer fibers also at conjugate points of the lens. The other end of the lens is coated with a mirror. Applying a voltage between either the inner or outer electrode changes the optical path length for the light from and to the fibers traveling through the material under the selected electrode causing the light from the two input fibers to be switched between the two output fibers. 2×N switches can be constructed by concatenating 2×2 switches.

    Abstract: A wireless communications systems for servicing mobile subscribers which dynamically optimizes the absolute number of channels reserved for use only as guard channels to minimize the blocking of handoff as well as new calls even under widely varying traffic and mobility conditions. This is accomplished by periodically first incorporating values, representative of traffic and mobility data typically collected in cellular systems, obtained over a given period of time, into an equation developed by the present inventors and calculating the number of guard channels needed to obtain assumed values of new and handoff call blocking; second changing the number of guard channels to the calculated value; and then third gathering data for a new period of time before returning to the first step.

    Abstract: There is provided a device for use with fiber-optic cables for polarization insensitive amplitude modulation of light comprising a planar electro-optic layer with a reflective conductive mirror electrode on one side and a pair of transparent conductive electrodes on the other. The transparent conductive electrodes have a small separation along a straight line. A GRIN lens has one end in optical contact with the transparent conductive electrodes with its axis located over the line separating the electrodes. An input optical fiber and an output optical fiber are placed in optical contact with the other end of the lens at points which are symmetrically displaced from the axis of the lens. Light coming from input fiber is collimated by the GRIN lens and directed to the transparent electrodes, through the electro-optic layer and to the mirror from which it is reflected and refocused by the GRIN lens onto the output fiber.

Further, each user record includes a plurality of terminal records with each of the terminal records including a respective terminal address.

    Abstract: The invention provides a structure comprising a high temperature superconducting layer deposited on a ceramic polycrystalline ferrite plate suitable for making commercial microwave devices. In one embodiment, the high temperature superconductor is yttrium barium copper oxide (YBCO), the ferrite is yttrium iron garnet (YIG), and the microwave device is a phase shifter. The method of making this embodiment comprises, polishing the YIG plate, depositing biaxially oriented yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) to form a crystalline template using an ion-beam-assisted-deposition technique, depositing a CeO.sub.2 lattice matching buffer layer using pulsed laser deposition, depositing YBCO using pulsed laser deposition, and annealing the YBCO in oxygen. Etching the YBCO to form a meanderline patterned waveguide results in a high figure-of-merit microwave phase shifter when the device is cooled with liquid nitrogen and an external magnetic field is applied.
