  • Publication number: 20110164982
Abstract: A rotor includes a first rotor segment having a first outer surface and a second rotor segment having a second outer surface. A mechanical joint is between the first and second rotor segments, and a cavity is radially outward of the mechanical joint and beneath the first and second outer surfaces. A weld bead is between the first and second outer surfaces. A method for manufacturing a rotor includes machining a first rotor segment having a first concentric axis of rotation and machining a second rotor segment having a second concentric axis of rotation. The method further includes aligning the first rotor segment to the second rotor segment radially using a mechanical joint and applying a weld bead over a portion of the first and second rotor segments to connect the first rotor segment to the second rotor segment.

  • Publication number: 20110155277
Abstract: An apparatus for tying a wire (46, 52) around one or more objects such as concrete reinforcing bars (2) is disclosed. It comprises means for passing the wire (46, 52) in a loop around the bars and a rotatable head 4 for twisting the ends of the loop together. The head (4) has at least one gripping means such as a variable force clutch (32) for gripping the wire, the gripping means being adapted to provide a variable gripping force so as to apply a predetermined tension to the wire during at least a first phase of twisting. Also disclosed is pre-feeding the wire between tying operations; conditioning the surface of the wire; and using the electrical conductivity of the reinforcing bars to verify that the bars are present before tying.

  • Publication number: 20110115616
Abstract: Aspects of the present invention are directed at allowing a vehicle to idle for a predetermined amount of time before shutdown. In accordance with one embodiment, a method is provided that accepts input from the vehicle operator to initiate a countdown to vehicle shutdown. When the input is received, a countdown is initiated that is regularly updated to reflect the passage of time. During the countdown, a vehicle ignition bus is maintained in an active state and a countdown value that reflects the time remaining before shutdown is presented on a graphical display. Then, in response to expiration of the countdown, the method allows the vehicle ignition bus to transition into an inactive state.

  • Patent number: 7917675
Abstract: An industrial process control apparatus and method that includes a number of processors and a number of input/output modules. Each processor is connected to a plurality of the input/output modules by a unidirectional command line. Each input/output module is connected to a plurality of the processors by a unidirectional response line. The processors are arranged to issue an identifier request to all of the connected input/output modules and each input/output module is arranged to respond to the identifier request via the respective response line with a response that includes a unique identifier. Such a configuration allows each processor to identify the physical location of each respective input/output module.

  • Publication number: 20110060939
Abstract: Application-level replication, the synchronization of data updates within a cluster of application servers, may be provided by having application servers themselves synchronize all updates to multiple redundant databases, precluding the need for database-level replication. This may be accomplished by first sending a set of database modifications requested by the transaction to a first database. Then a message may be placed in one or more message queues, the message indicating the objects inserted, updated, or deleted in the transaction. Then a commit command may be sent to the first database. The set of database modifications and a commit command may then be sent to a second database. This allows for transparent synchronization of the databases and quick recovery from a database failure, while imposing little performance or network overhead.

  • Publication number: 20110053731
Abstract: A transmission arrangement for an engine driven vehicle having two continuously variable transmissions serving to drive left and right hand vehicle wheels at separately variable drive ratios. Each transmission incorporates a variator of the type in which a net torque applied to the variator through its input and output is referred to a ratio control part, which may be formed as a control lever, whose position governs the transmission's drive ratio. The control parts of the variators are each operatively coupled to a driver's speed control, such that the speed control determines a mean position of the two control parts. However they are both also able to move relative to the mean position, under the influence of the torque they react. Additionally the control parts are coupled to each other such that any displacement of one control part from the mean position is accompanied by an opposite displacement of the other control part.

  • Publication number: 20100297263
Abstract: A composition comprising, per litre of aqueous solution, from 30 to 350 g polyethylene glycol, from 3 to 20 g of an ascorbic acid component selected form the group consisting of ascorbic acid, a salt of ascorbic acid, or a mixture thereof, an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal sulphate, preferably from 1 to 15 g thereof, and optionally one or more electrolytes selected from sodium chloride, potassium chloride, and sodium hydrogen carbonate, and preferably also comprising flavourings, is effective in cleansing the gut in preparation for a endoscopy, especially colonoscopy. It is safer than conventional sodium phosphate-based gut cleansing compositions, and hence can be used for patients who would be at risk with sodium phosphate-based compositions, and is better tolerated than conventional PEG-based compositions, leading to better patient compliance and enabling effective out-patient use.
