  • Patent number: 8959957
Abstract: Methods are described for manufacturing silica-based glass, in which silica precursor material is supplied to a synthesis flame in the form of an emulsion. The methods involve the steps of: forming an emulsion of an aqueous phase in a non-aqueous liquid silica precursor material; supplying the emulsion as a spray of droplets into a synthesis flame, whereby the precursor material is converted in the flame into a silica-containing soot; and collecting the soot on a substrate, either as a porous soot body for subsequent consolidation to glass or directly as a substantially pore-free glass.

  • Patent number: 8635061
Abstract: Methods, systems, and media are provided for identifying languages in multilingual text. A document is decoded into a universal representative coding for easier tag manipulation, then broken into plain-text content sections. The sections are identified and assigned a weight, wherein more informative sections are given a higher weight and less informative sections are given a lesser weight. A language likelihood score is determined for each word, phrase, or character n-gram in a section. The language likelihood scores within a section are combined for each language. The combined section scores are then summed together to obtain a total document score for each language. This results in a document score for each language, which can be ranked to determine the primary language for the document.

  • Patent number: 8380003
Abstract: Image reconstruction is based on phase retrieval by combining incomplete Fourier-space magnitude data with real-space information. Phase retrieval is performed based on the Fourier-space magnitude data, where the real-space information is expressed in a form suitable to use as a phase retrieval constraint, preferably using a wavelet-space representation. The use of incomplete Fourier-space magnitude data advantageously reduces the amount of data required compared to approaches that need comprehensive Fourier-space magnitude data. The real space information can be regarded as partial information of the image being reconstructed. Depending on the application, more or less real space information may be available.

  • Patent number: RE43542
Abstract: An optical fiber terminating assembly has an outer body (10), a first member (11) locatable in the outer body (10) and which carries a protruding length of optical fiber (36) which locates an alignment structure (44, 45) and a housing (12) locatable in alignment with the first member (11). The housing (12) has an access opening for receiving an optical fiber (52, 53) to be terminated so that the fiber can be located in the alignment structure in abutment with the optical fiber length (35). The housing has a compartment (47) which receives a heat responsive adhesive element (57), a saddle (58) and a resistor (59). When a current is passed through the resistor, the heat generated is transmitted by the saddle to the adhesive which melts and flows around the optical fiber (52, 53) to secure it in position in abutment with the optical fiber length (35).
