  • Patent number: 6582634
Abstract: A method of converting a plastics material into a yarn, in which the plastics material includes one or more polymers selected from the group consisting of nylon, polyesters, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyphenylene sulphide, polystyrene. The method includes heating the material to melt it, pumping the melted material through an extruder to form an extruded filament, and cooling the extruded filament. The cooled filament is passed through a first draw roller assembly while elevating the temperature of the filament. The filament is then heated in a heating zone as it exits the first draw roller assembly and, thereafter, the filament is passed through a second draw roller assembly operating at a different linear speed to the first draw roller assembly. The filament is spooled after exiting the second draw roller assembly.

  • Patent number: 6547683
Abstract: A hockey stick has a head (3) with an enlarged gape (20) with an extended toe height (T). The stick exhibits a circulation effect whereby when placed face down on a ball with the lowermost part of the outer edge of the stick in contact with the ground, the stick may be twisted in one direction to the open stick playing position and in the other direction to the reverse stick playing position, whilst the spatial position of the stick is not varied and the outer edge is in rolling contact with the ground and without disturbing the ball. The head also provides enhanced catching features which provide significantly increased control of the ball during play.

  • Patent number: 6441711
Abstract: A high temperature superconductor (HTSC) 5 is magnetized between drive coils 1,2 forming poles of a magnet connected by an iron yoke 9 by relative movement of a vacuum insulated cryostat 4 containing the HTSC and the magnetizing magnet, in order to magnetize a large area of HTSC using a magnet with a small region 3 of magnetizing flux. Alternatively, the HTSC 5may be contained in an evacuated region of a cryostat containing the magnetizing magnet. An interconnecting chamber allows the HTSC to be moved between an operative region and a magnetizing region without substantial loss of vacuum.

  • Patent number: 6438236
Abstract: Apparatus for labelling a stereophonic signal includes a plurality of notch filters having selected center frequencies to form notches at the selected frequencies in the channels of a stereophonic audio signal. Code generating components produce a coded label signal in the form of one or more code words, with the code being formed of selected signal bursts at the selected frequencies. The coded label signals are inserted into both channels of the audio signal, in the notches formed by the notch filters. The code signal amplitude bears a predetermined relationship to the audio signal amplitude in each channel.

  • Patent number: 6424154
Abstract: The image produced by a magnetic resonance imaging apparatus using a receive coil 2 has inaccuracies due to external circumstances which affect the signal produced by the coil 2. Thus, noise spikes affect the signal, although more usually extensive shielding is provided. Also, changes of loading of the coil produced by movement of the patient vary the Q of the coil and hence the signal output. In accordance with a first aspect of the invention, a second coil 4 superimposed on the coil 2 is tuned to a frequency offset compared to the MR center frequency and is used to monitor coil loading to enable the signal from coil 2 to be corrected, and in accordance with a second aspect of the invention an additional coil 4 or 8, preferably both, is/are provided in order to detect broadband noise and enable its suppression on the output of the coil 2.

  • Patent number: 6411410
Abstract: An optical line termination (OLT) device (12) generates a plurality of optical signals having different respective wavelengths (&lgr;1, &lgr;2), each optical signal carrying data, and wavelength-division-multiplexes the optical signals. A plurality of optical network units (ONUs 141-145) are connected to the OLT device (12) by way of a passive optical network (6) so as to receive the wavelength-division-multiplexed optical signals. Each ONU (14) has a wavelength selection unit operable in dependence upon control information sent from the OLT (12) to the ONU (14) concerned by way of the passive optical network (6) to select one of the optical signals of the plurality, and also has a detector for processing the selected optical signal to derive therefrom the data carried thereby.
