  • Patent number: 8589570
Abstract: A network device forwards a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) setup request from an originating user device toward a destination user device via multiple network elements and intercepts a message-too-large error message sent from one of the multiple network elements to the originating user device. The network device automatically splits the session setup request into smaller SIP messages, where a size of each of the smaller SIP messages is less than or equal to a particular size of message that the network element will accept. The network device then notifies another one of the multiple elements that the session setup request has been split into the smaller SIP messages and sends, via the multiple network elements, the smaller SIP messages toward the destination user device on behalf of the originating device.

  • Patent number: 8576815
Abstract: A device receives roaming information associated with a user equipment (UE), a current eNodeB conducting a current Internet protocol (IP) session with the UE, and a plurality of eNodeBs that are neighboring the current eNodeB. The device also selects, based on the roaming information and from the plurality of eNodeBs, an optimal eNodeB to which to handover the UE, and establishes a preemptive IP session with the optimal eNodeB. The device further initiates a handover of the current IP session and the UE from the current eNodeB to the optimal eNodeB, where the current eNodeB acts as an anchoring point for a bearer path associated with the UE during the handover.

  • Patent number: 8571582
Abstract: A device receives, at a particular time, instructions to send a page to user equipment. The device determines, based on a paging list, if the user equipment is associated with a particular serving base station for the particular time. When the user equipment is associated with the particular serving base station for the particular time, the device sends the page to the user equipment via the particular serving base station. When the user equipment is not associated with a serving base station for the particular time, the device sends the page to the user equipment via all base stations associated with a tracking area list for the user equipment.

  • Patent number: 8554933
Abstract: A device receives a PDN connection request from a UE, and exchanges, with a HSS, authentication and authorization information associated with the UE. The device also constructs an APN FQDN based on the authentication and authorization information, and sends a query, that includes the APN FQDN, to a DNS server. The device further receives, from the DNS server, PGW FQDNs that contain the APN FQDN, and compares the PGW FQDNs with a FQDN associated with a SGW. The device determines, based on the comparison, a PGW, associated with a PGW FQDN that is a closest match to the FQDN associated with the SGW, to be a primary PGW for the PDN connection request. The device also determines, based on the comparison, one or more PGWs, residing within a predetermined distance of the SGW, to be one or more backup PGWs for the PDN connection request.

  • Publication number: 20130242754
Abstract: A first node device, associated with an evolved packet core network, receives an error code from a second node device associated with the evolved packet core network, where the error code is destined for a user equipment. The first node device compares the error code to information included in a data structure that maps multiple error codes to multiple translated error codes understood by the user equipment, and translates the error code into a translated error code based on the comparing of the error code to the information included in the data structure. The translated error code is in a format that is understood by the user equipment. The first node device provides the translated error code to the user equipment or to a third node device associated with the evolved packet core network.

  • Publication number: 20130242727
Abstract: A first device, provided in an evolved packet core (EPC) network, receives load information associated with a second device provided in the EPC network. The load information includes a load threshold associated with the second device. The first device also receives traffic to be provided to the second device, and determines whether providing the traffic to the second device will cause the second device to exceed the load threshold. The first device provides the traffic to the second device when providing the traffic to the second device will not cause the second device to exceed the load threshold. The first device reduces a quantity associated with the traffic, to create throttled traffic, and provides the throttled traffic to the second device, when providing the traffic to the second device will cause the second device to exceed the load threshold.

  • Publication number: 20130189951
Abstract: A first mobility management entity (MME) device receives an attachment request that includes information associated with a user device. The first MME device creates a context for the user device based on the information, stores the context, and creates an optimized context based on the context, where a size of the optimized context is smaller than a size of the context. The first MME device also identifies a second MME device that is a backup for the first MME device, and transmits the optimized context to the second MME device.

  • Publication number: 20130094395
Abstract: A device provides, to a domain name system (DNS), a request for candidate network nodes to which to connect, and receives, from the DNS and based on the request, a list of fully qualified domain names (FQDNs) for the candidate network nodes. The device truncates the FQDNs in the list of FQDNs to create a list of truncated FQDNs corresponding to the candidate network nodes, and stores the list of truncated FQDNs in a buffer associated with the device.

  • Publication number: 20130074149
Abstract: A device receives, from a user equipment (UE), a first request to access a first packet data network (PDN), and receives authentication information from the UE. The device also grants, based on the first request, the UE access to the first PDN when the authentication information authenticates the UE. The device further receives, from the UE, a second request to access a second PDN, and determines whether a re-authentication timer associated with the second PDN has expired before granting the UE access to the second PDN.

  • Patent number: 8392581
Abstract: Systems and/or methods described herein may include an Internet Protocol (IP) Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) optimization server in communication with network elements within an IMS network. The IMS SIP optimization server may facilitate an end-to-end SIP session between an originating user device and a terminating user device, while sending SIP session information to intermediate network elements in parallel. The IMS SIP optimization server may receive a SIP request from a first network element and send a related SIP request to a last network element. The IMS SIP optimization server may also send customized packet messages to any intermediate network elements, where the intermediate network elements are between the first network element and the last network element in the SIP sequence, and where the customized packet message includes SIP setup commands for each of the intermediate network elements.

  • Patent number: 8351944
Abstract: A method implemented in a mobile device includes identifying a target wireless network for a handover, where the target wireless network uses a different access technology than an existing wireless network being used by the mobile device. The mobile device determines that a signal for the existing wireless network meets an early registration trigger threshold and initiates, based on the determining, an early registration of the mobile device with the target wireless network, where an early registration is performed at a sufficient time prior to the actual handover to preclude a registration delay associated with the handover to the different access technology.
