  • Patent number: 5494604
Abstract: The present invention provides an improved liquid crystal material comprising a liquid crystal material dispersed in a polymer matrix. The polymeric matrix can be a thermal-based system such as an epoxy-based thermal polymeric system or a UV-curable system such as an acrylate-based polymeric system. The polymeric matrix has a crosslinking density which minimizes the driving voltage while maintaining a good contrast ratio. A process using dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA) testing identifies a T.sub.g and crosslinking density which are employed to determine the optimum degree of crosslinking.

  • Patent number: 5380263
Abstract: A waist sporting equipment has a circular ring member sized to encircle around the waist portion of a user and having a predetermined cross-section, an inertia member of a predetermined weight for applying the centrifugal force and inertia force gradually to the ring member upon rotation of the ring member, the inertia member including a weight body and connecting means for connecting the ring member and the inertia member for not separating the members upon the rotation of the members. The weight body is spaced a predetermined distance from the ring and applies the centrifugal force and the inertia force to the ring depending on the rotational velocity of the ring, thus giving a user various velocity and amusement feeling. Furthermore, the centrifugal force acts on the waist portion so that the waist may be stronger and limber and the body of the user may be well balanced.

  • Patent number: 4929510
Abstract: A polymer article and a method for making the polymer article. The polymer article includes a hydrophobic polymer substrate and a block copolymer. The block copolymer has at least first and second blocks. The first block is more hydrophobic than the second block. The molecules of the block copolymer are secured into the surface of said substrate by means of the first block and at least a portion of the second block, outwardly extends from the surface of the substrate into the environment. The method for making the polymer article, comprising a block copolymer and a hydrophobic substrate, comprises the steps of: (a) forming a solution of a block copolymer and a solvent which will solubilize said block copolymer and swell said substrate. The block copolymer has at least a first and second block.

  • Patent number: 4461715
Abstract: A visual display device is featured which uses a new thermal addressing technique to provide a dark image upon a lighter background. The display is capable of being multiplexed to a large number of rows. The device comprises a cholesteric-smectic liquid crystal material mixed with a pleochroic dye of high order parameter. When the material experiences a transition from a higher to a lower, smectic thermal phase, two different textures or light states are developed; a transparent state and a light absorbing state. The transparent state is developed by applying a sensitizing voltage to certain portions of the medium. The pleochroic dye absorbs the light passing through the unsensitized portions of medium to provide the dark image. The row electrodes are made diffusely reflective so as to provide a double light pass through the medium to improve contrast.
