The apparatus has an annular ring including a positioning member having an inwardly projecting edge for axially positioning the annular ring on the first and second inner races, and a seal for sealing the annular ring against the first and second inner races. The inwardly projecting edge of the positioning member engages the beveled opposing edges of the first and second inner races so that oil supplied between the shaft and the inner surfaces of the races is prevented from flowing through the gap.

In order to reduce the heat transfer between hub and disc and minimize the stresses in the disc caused by the temperature distribution and the mechanical effects, the tip arc length for each tooth is less than the root arc length for each groove which is delimited by two opposing flanks of adjacent teeth, the flanks each merge at the respective root side of the teeth into a first radius Ra, which in turn emerges into a second radius Rb which forms the bottom of the groove and is common for the two opposing flanks.

The lock ring has a first side surface lying in contact with a surface on the brake disc and a second side surface located radially inwardly of the first side surface, the second side surface being in contact with a surface of the hub. The lock ring also has areas located radially between the first and second side surfaces which lack contact both with the surfaces on the brake disc and the brake hub. The lock ring is also provided with circumferentially spaced bosses. The lock ring permits limited axial displacement of the brake disc, relative to the carrier portion of the hub, upon axial loading of the brake disc.

    Abstract: A wheel hub and brake disc arrangement for a vehicle wheel, comprising a hub rotatably carried on a shaft portion and presenting an outwardly facing region of non-circular cross-section, and a brake disc which is carried by this region of the hub. The brake disc having a central hole, the shape of which is adapted to the shape of the non-circular cross-section thereby to provide a mutually non-rotatable attachment of the brake disc to the hub. The non-circular region of the hub comprises closely spaced V-shaped ridges (10) and troughs (11), and the central hole of the brake disc is provided with corresponding V-shaped troughs (13) and ridges (14) which are so adapted in relation to the ridges and troughs on the hub that a slip fit between the hub and disc is achieved. The depth of the troughs is greater than the height of the ridges, so that there is a substantial gap between the bottoms of the troughs and the tops of the ridges.
