  • Patent number: 5409062
Abstract: A method of inhibiting the formation and deposition of scale in the production of hydrocarbons from subterranean reservoirs. The method is particularly effective at inhibiting the formation and deposition of calcium and barium scales in the produced waters of hydrocarbon recovery operations. The method comprises introducing into the produced water a polyepoxysuccinic acid of the general formula: ##STR1## where n ranges from about 2 to about 11, M is hydrogen or a water soluble cation such as Na.sup.+, NH.sub.4.sup.+, K.sup.+ and R is hydrogen, C.sub.1-4 alkyl or C.sub.1-4 substituted alkyl.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 17, 1993
Date of Patent: April 25, 1995
    Assignee: Betz Laboratories, Inc.
Inventors: J. Michael Brown, Gene F. Brock
  • Patent number: 5393456
Abstract: A method for the inhibition of silica and silicate deposits on the internal surfaces of a water system consisting of adding to the water system a composition comprised of a blend of two water soluble copolymers. The first copolymer contains repeat units of maleic or acrylic acids and a phosphinic acid, or salt forms thereof. The second copolymer contains repeat units of acrylic acid and allyl hydroxy propyl sulfonate ether, or salt forms thereof.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 22, 1993
Date of Patent: February 28, 1995
    Assignee: Betz Laboratories, Inc.
Inventors: Libardo A. Perez, J. Michael Brown, Khac T. Nguyen

  • Patent number: 5147555
Abstract: A method of treating water to inhibit the formation of scale is disclosed. The method is particularly effective at inhibiting the formation and deposition of calcium and barium scales in aqueous systems such as cooling water systems. The method comprises introducing into the aqueous system a polyepoxysuccinic acid of the general formula ##STR1## when n ranges from about 2 to about 11, M is hydrogen or a water soluble cation such as Na.sup.+, NH.sub.4.sup.+, or K.sup.+ and R is hydrogen, C.sub.1-4 alkyl or C.sub.1-4 substituted alkyl.

Inventors: J. Michael Brown, John F. McDowell, Kin-Tai Chang
  • Patent number: 5100558
Abstract: A method for the inhibition of silica deposition on the surfaces of a structure which contains an aqueous medium comprising adding to the aqueous medium a composition comprising HEDP, PEG and a water soluble polymer having the structure: ##STR1## wherein M is a water soluble cation. This invention is particularly effective in cooling water and steam generating systems.

  • Patent number: 5062962
Abstract: A method of treating water to inhibit the formation of scale is disclosed. The method is particularly effective at inhibiting the formation and deposition of calcium and barium scales in circulating aqueous systems such as cooling water systems. The method comprises introducing into the aqueous system a polyepoxysuccinic acid of the general formula ##STR1## where n ranges from about 2 to about 11, M is hydrogen or a water soluble cation such as Na.sup.+, NH.sub.4.sup.+, or K.sup.+ and R is hydrogen, C.sub.1-4 alkyl or C.sub.1-4 substituted alkyl.
