  • Patent number: 11590719
Abstract: A fiber-composite part having one or more electronic components that are located in arbitrary regions of the internal volume of the part are fabricated using a preform charge. The preform charge has a structure that corresponds to that of the mold cavity in which the part is being formed. By incorporating the electronic components in the preform charge, such components are then precisely located, spatially oriented, and constrained, and such location and orientation is maintained during molding to produce a part with the electronic components in the desired locations and orientations within its internal volume.

  • Patent number: 11584049
Abstract: A method for making structural foam parts having continuous aligned fibers includes placing an assemblage of fiber-bundle-based preforms in an injection mold, creating a melt flow of resin and, optionally, short, loose fiber, and adding foaming agent to the melt flow. When the foaming agent/melt flow mixture is introduced into the injection mold, the foaming agent foams. The assemblage is structured and positioned so that fibers therefrom adopt a desired alignment and position in the final part. Structural foam fills the remainder of the volume of the part.

  • Publication number: 20230038063
Abstract: Photocurable colloid binders are provided that overcome deficiencies associated with 3D printing of high molecular weight polymers via VAT photopolymerization. Methods of additive manufacturing are also provided using the binders. The approaches described herein effectively decouple the viscosity-molecular weight relationship by synthesizing and processing photo-reactive aqueous colloids that are sequestered within a photocrosslinkable scaffold. Sequestering polymers within discrete internal phases prevents inter-particle entanglement of the polymer chains, thus ensuring low viscosity. VP of polymer colloids results in a solid green body embedded with high molecular weight polymer particles. A post-processing heated drying step allows the polymers to coalesce and further entangle, forming a semi-interpenetrating network with mechanical performance of the high molecular weight material. The resins can further include inorganic particles such as silica and other ceramics, metal particles, and the like.

  • Publication number: 20230005696
Abstract: A vacuum tube insert assembly includes a flared insert piece having an annular flange and a stem each constructed of glass. The stem extends axially from the flange. The flange surrounds a perimeter edge of a plug concavity defined by the stem. Feed-through pins pass axially through the stem and are sealed thereto. The pins terminate inside of the concavity to form a plug. A socket connects to the plug within the concavity and includes receptacles that removably couple to the pins, with an engagement feature preventing erroneous plug and socket connections. A method includes axially inserting the pins through the stem at a fixed relative position such that the pins are arranged within the plug concavity, sealing the stem such that the stem is vacuum-sealed to the pins, thereby forming the plug, and removably coupling mating receptacles of the socket to the pins.

  • Patent number: 11534987
Abstract: A method for forming a composite part involves forming a layup comprising (a) preforms/flat form-factor feedstock, either of which includes a plurality of fibers and a matrix precursor, and (b) a differential-melt polymer. The matrix precursor and the differential-melt polymer differ as to at least one of thermal properties and rheological properties. The layup is subjected to controlled application of heat and pressure to melt the matrix precursor and differential-melt polymer. The polymers are then cooled to form a composite part that displays properties attributable to all the constituents. As a function of a variety of factors, the resulting part can be homogenous or heterogenous, and the properties can be localized or global throughout the part.

  • Patent number: 11534593
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a rotary blood pump system. The rotary blood pump system may comprise an inflow conduit, an outflow conduit, a control system, and a power source. The present disclosure further relates to various inflow conduit assemblies comprising a conduit tip comprised of metal or polymer having an undulating opening surface that provides improved blood flow and washing properties while minimizing regions susceptible to stagnation, and optionally a resilient tip-protecting cage structure that reduces the risk of conduit tip suction events and suction-related injury of the wall of adjacent blood vessels or other blood containing structures. The present disclosure further relates to various outflow conduit assemblies with a conduit tip comprised of metal or polymer wherein the cross-sectional area of the lumen of the conduit or conduit tip is reduced to generate a localized jet-like fluid flow in a blood vessel segment adjacent to the conduit tip.

  • Publication number: 20220396036
Abstract: A system and methods are disclosed for producing components via additive manufacturing. In one embodiment, a three-dimensional geometry is sliced using a slicing plane to obtain a first two-dimensional geometry. A first polyline is generated based on a first skeleton of the first two-dimensional geometry, and a first slender body is generated based on the first polyline. The first slender body is subtracted from the first two-dimensional geometry to obtain a second two-dimensional geometry. A second polyline is generated based on a second skeleton of the second two-dimensional geometry. A first bundle of fibers is produced based on a segmentation of the first polyline and a second bundle of fibers is produced based on a segmentation of the second polyline. A component is produced from the first and second bundles of fibers using an additive manufacturing process.
