  • Publication number: 20170191341
Abstract: Magnetorheological fluids may regulate fluid flow downhole by forming a fluid seal using a bridge plug apparatus. Bridge plug apparatuses employing a magnetorheological fluid may be deployed in a wellbore in a retrievable configuration or in a substantially permanent configuration. Retrievable bridge plug apparatuses may comprise spaced apart magnets having a gap defined therebetween, and a reservoir of magnetorheological fluid housed within the gap. The magnets move laterally with respect to one another to expand or contract the gap and to displace the reservoir of magnetorheological fluid radially with respect to the magnets. Other bridge plug apparatuses may comprise a flow path extending between a reservoir of magnetorheological fluid and the exterior of a housing, where at least a portion of the flow path is located within a gap defined between spaced apart magnets.

  • Publication number: 20170133124
Abstract: In accordance with embodiments of the present disclosure, a cable system for conveying well servicing equipment into a wellbore includes a core support structure extending longitudinally along an axis of the cable system. The core support structure comprises polymer reinforced with fibers, and the fibers are oriented substantially parallel to the axis of the cable system. The cable system also includes a mesh layer disposed around and bonded to the core support structure. The mesh layer includes metal wrapped around the core support structure. The cable system also includes a polymeric coating disposed around and bonded to the mesh layer. The mesh layer enables increased structural support of the cable system, particularly against forces in the radial direction relative to the axis of the cable system. In some applications, the mesh layer acts as a return conductive path for conductors embedded in the core support structure.

  • Patent number: 9347288
Abstract: In modeling operation of a well tool in applying a force to a device in a well, a computing system receives inputs representing a plurality of geometric characteristics of the well tool. The computing system also receives inputs representing a plurality of geometric characteristics of the well. The computing system determines based on the geometric characteristics of the well tool and the well, a predicted reaction force on a portion of the well tool that affects operation of the well tool in applying force to the device. The predicted reaction force is due to contact between a surface associated with the well tool and a surface of the well.

  • Patent number: 9316077
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are presented for a hybrid downhole force generator (DFG) using a stroke amplifier driven by hydrostatic pressure for a low-force, long-stroke portion of setting a downhole tool and a DFG powered shaft for a high-force, short-stroke portion of setting the tool. The stroke amplifier has a piston slidable in a housing, movable in response to hydrostatic pressure. The DFG powered shaft is connected to the piston via one-way slips which allow relative motion of the piston and shaft in one direction. The amplifier housing is connected to the DFG housing. In use, the DFG shaft is powered by a power supply, such as an electric motor, etc. The shaft is powered to shear a shearing mechanism, freeing the piston to move in response to the hydrostatic pressure.
