The resulting products are useful for their organoleptic properties as foodstuff flavorants and flavor enhancers, perfume composition ingredients, perfumed article ingredients and tobacco flavorants and flavor enhancers.

The mixture of isomers of caryophyllene alcohol and dihydro caryophyllene alcohol are prepared by isomerizing caryophyllene oxide or dihydro caryophyllene oxide using an aluminum isopropylate catalyst and a toluene solvent at temperatures in the range of from about 100.degree. C. up to about 150.degree. C.
