Abstract: Described is a process for preparing hydrogenated derivatives of 2,6,6-trimethyl cyclohexene derivatives by means of treating said derivatives with hydrogen in the presence of a supported palladium catalyst such as palladium-on-calcium carbonate or palladium-on-barium sulfate in the presence of a quinoline activator. The resulting products are useful for their organoleptic properties as foodstuff flavorants and flavor enhancers, perfume composition ingredients, perfumed article ingredients and tobacco flavorants and flavor enhancers.

Abstract: Described is a derivative of a 2-oxabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (1,3,5,5-tetramethyl-2-oxabicyclo[2.2.2]octane) and the precursor thereof, alpha 4,6,6-tetramethyl-3-cyclohexenemethanol. The said oxabicyclooctane derivative is useful in perfumery and foodstuff, medicinal product and tobacco flavors. The cyclohexenemethanol derivative is useful as a precursor for the said oxabicyclooctane.

Abstract: Described is the compound 6-hydroxy-2,6-dimethylheptanal and methods for preparing foodstuffs, flavoring compositions for foodstuffs, tobacco compositions, flavoring compositions for tobacco, perfume compositions, ingredients for perfume compositions, perfumed articles and ingredients for perfumed articles by including said 6-hydroxy-2,6-dimethylheptanal therein in order to produce:(a) In food flavorings, sweet, green, melon-like, tropical fruit-like, seedy and raspberry aromas and/or tastes;(b) In perfumes, sweet, green, melony, floral and muguet-like aromas; and(c) In tobaccos, sweet, fruity-melon-like, peach-like, and floral aromas prior to and on smoking in the main stream and in the sidestream in smoking tobaccos and the same aroma and taste nuances in the filter.Processes for synthesizing the 6-hydroxy-2,6-dimethylheptanal by hydrolysis of 2,6-dimethyl-5-heptenal are also described.

Abstract: Described is the use of a mixture of isomers of caryophyllene alcohol or dihydro caryophyllene alcohol including 10,10-dimethyl-2,6-dimethylene bicyclo(7.2.0)undecan-5-ol in augmenting or enhancing the aroma or taste of smoking tobacco, smoking tobacco articles and smoking tobacco flavors. The mixture of isomers of caryophyllene alcohol and dihydro caryophyllene alcohol are prepared by isomerizing caryophyllene oxide or dihydro caryophyllene oxide using an aluminum isopropylate catalyst and a toluene solvent at temperatures in the range of from about 100.degree. C. up to about 150.degree. C.
