Patent number: 5657909Abstract: A manually actuated pump sprayer has an unvalved vent port connected by a vent tube to a float buoyed on the liquid level within the container. A dip tube forming a liquid passage extends from a valve controlled inlet which leads into the pump chamber. A terminal end of the liquid passage defined by the dip tube is connected to the float for communicating that end with the liquid in the container, and a terminal end of the air passage defined by the vent tube is connected to the float for communicating the air passage terminal end with the head space in the container. The pressure within the head space is always maintained at atmospheric, and the sprayer is capable of being operated in any position without leakage. The tubes may formed as an integrally extruded double tube with air pockets formed along the length of the double tube to define the float. And, buoyant material forming the air passage may define the float.Type: GrantFiled: January 4, 1996Date of Patent: August 19, 1997Assignee: Calmar Inc.Inventor: Jacques J. Barriac

Patent number: 5611490Abstract: A foamer nozzle assembly has dual screens of intersecting strands in spaced sets of strands, the strands of one set being offset relative to the strands of the other set for establishing two turbulence zones as the flow direction of spray particles is deflected when passing through the first screen and as the flow direction of the spray particles is further deflected when passing through the second screen. The screens are located in a cylinder of the assembly which may or may not define a turbulence cylinder depending on the spacing of the screens from the discharge orifice. The screens may be spaced apart a given distance to establish a turbulence zone therebetween.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 1994Date of Patent: March 18, 1997Assignee: Calmar Inc.Inventors: Jacques J. Barriac, Adonis Spathias

Patent number: 5360127Abstract: A non-removable closure assembly for connecting a manually actuated liquid dispenser to a container includes a closure cap having internal threads for mating engagement with similar threads on the outside of the container neck finish, both the cap and the neck finish having mutually engageable ratchet teeth locking the closure onto the container. The teeth inside the cap each have a trailing face extending radially at an upper end thereof and lying in a plane sloping toward the thread loosening direction of the cap at an angle greater than or equal to 1.degree. relative to the central axis of the cap for creating a camming action between the closure teeth and the neck finish teeth tending to cam the closure down on the container in response to closure rotation in the loosening direction.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 1994Date of Patent: November 1, 1994Assignee: Calmar Inc.Inventors: Jacques J. Barriac, Ron E. Harriman

Patent number: 4878604Abstract: A dispensing package comprising a pressure pumping source provided by the container, and a three-piece fluid delivery system which includes closure, dip tube fitted on the closure and a delivery spout for handling light-duty liquid. The closure functions as a push-pull closure providing an "on"/"off" position for dispensing without a need to remove or replace the closure on the container. Dispensing is accomplished without the need to lift or tip the container. The closure seals in a liquid-tight condition when placed in the "off" position. The side dispensing spout can be rotated horizontally to any desired position for ease of dispensing or for shipping in an out-of-the-way position.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 1988Date of Patent: November 7, 1989Assignee: Owens-Illinois Closure Inc.Inventor: Jacques J. Barriac

Patent number: 4807770Abstract: A tamper evident, vacuum indicating closure for a container for the packaging of a vacuum-packed product, the closure being of two-piece construction and having a metal lid portion which is retained in sealing engagement with the rim of a container by a plastic ring portion. The metal lid portion has a vacuum indicating button centered therein. The ring portion of the closure has a series of spaced apart flanges projecting radially inwardly at the top thereof to urge the top of a curl at the outside of the lid against the rim of the container, the ring portion of the container further having a series of spaced apart flexible tabs to engage the underside of the curl of the lid so that the lid portion and the ring portion can be conveniently handled in unison, and to positively remove the lid from the finish of the container at the time of the removal of the closure from the container.Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 1988Date of Patent: February 28, 1989Assignee: Owens-Illinois Closure Inc.Inventor: Jacques J. Barriac

Patent number: 4801031Abstract: A tamper-indicating closure and package and method of making comprising a one-piece molded closure of plastic which threads onto a container such that when the closure is unthreaded, a tamper-indicating band becomes separated from the lower end of the closure skirt. The tamper-indicating band is joined to the closure along a weakened frangible line. A flexible wall is formed within the band and extends axially toward the base of the closure. The wall has a free edge which has circumferentially flexible spaced flexible wall portions defining pleats or scallops that extend radially inwardly. When the closure is applied to the container, the circumferentially extending wall portions flex radially outwardly over the annular bead on the container and then radially inwardly beneath the annular bead. When the closure is unthreaded, the upper edges of the circumferentially spaced circumferential wall portions engage the underside of the bead and cause the band to sever along the weakened line.Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 1987Date of Patent: January 31, 1989Assignee: Owens-Illinois Closure Inc.Inventor: Jacques J. Barriac

The tamper-indicating band is joined to the closure along a weakened frangible line. A flexible annular wall is formed within the band and extends inwardly and upwardly when the closure is applied to container finish. The band further includes a plurality of circumferentially spaced flexible walls extending circumferentially and fastened at their circumferential ends to the inner surface of the annular wall and having portions intermediate their ends which extend radially inwardly.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 1987Date of Patent: January 31, 1989Assignee: Owens-Illinois Closure Inc.Inventor: Jacques J. Patent number: 4751036Abstract: An improved molded plastic closure having an integral tamper indicating band including a plurality of upwardly and inwardly extending tabs is disclosed. Also disclosed are an improved mold and molding process for the production of such a closure. The closure comprises an upper skirt portion and a lower tamper indicating band formed integrally with the upper skirt portion. Connected to the tamper indicating band and depending upwardly and inwardly therefrom are a plurality of tabs adapted to cooperate with an annular bead provided on a container finish. The tabs are molded in their upwardly and inwardly extending orientation so that free ends of the tabs terminate radially inwardly from an inner surface of the upper skirt portion. A two-piece core is used to form the inner surfaces of the upper skirt portion and the tamper indicating band. The tabs, in their as-molded orientation, are positioned to interfere with the core during removal of the closure therefrom.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 1987Date of Patent: June 14, 1988Assignee: Owens-Illinois Closure Inc.Inventor: Jacques J. Patent number: 4749103Abstract: A child resistant dispensing closure having a pourout style spout that is telescopically mounted on a cylindrical extension of the closure. The closure is described with two embodiments of a push-pull spout. In both cases the closure threads onto a container finish and a pourout spout of the push-pull type is mounted on a cylindrical extension of the closure. The closure extension has a side opening adjacent the closed upper end through which the contents may be dispensed. The spout effectively closes the opening when in assembled form. Interengaging beads and lugs formed on the exterior of said closure and interior of said spout define the only relative rotational position that permits the spout being pulled up on the closure to uncover the opening therein. The proper rotational position is indicated when indicia on the spout and closure are aligned.Type: GrantFiled: January 8, 1987Date of Patent: June 7, 1988Assignee: Owens-Illinois Closure Inc.Inventor: Jacques J.
