  • Publication number: 20080135763
Abstract: An infrared imaging microscope, particularly of the type used to carry out FT-IR measurement, has a detector in the form of a small detector array of individual detector elements. The outputs of the detector elements are fed in parallel to processing means which process the output signals. The use of a small array means that the outputs can be processed without the need for complex multiplexing or perhaps no multiplexing at all thus avoiding the reduction in signal to noise ratio which is associated with large scale multiplexing. The small detector array will generally have between 3 and 100 detector elements. Typically the upper limit will be 64 and a preferred arrangement has 16 detector elements.

  • Patent number: 7380271
Abstract: Access Control Lists (ACLs) are used to describe the permitted actions (permissions) on protected network computer system resources or objects associated with an client or user identity. An identity may be an individual user or group of users. The actions are used to represent the different access methods available on a particular projected object or resource. A new action grouping mechanism is provided which tags each action with an action group name. The grouping of actions facilitates a larger permission set to be defined in an ACL, whereas action permission indicators can be reused for unique action definitions within various action groups. This effectively extends the finite total number of permissions available within a security system, allows a more descriptive and extensible permission mechanism in an Access Control List, as well as aiding in the simplification of management and definition of security policies.

  • Patent number: 7208906
Abstract: A switched reluctance drive is supplied from a power source. The phases of the machine are controlled by a current controller which uses an excitation strategy to minimize the supply current drawn for a particular output. The strategy alternates the excitation between two phases for a given time until the rotor moves to a desired position. A method of starting a switched reluctance motor having a stator with at least two phases, a moveable part, and a position transducer includes determining from transducer output a plurality of phases that are available to produce force in a desired direction, energizing a first phase of the available phases for a predetermined time period that is independent of the transducer output, and energizing a second phase of the available phases after energization of the first phase is initiated.

  • Publication number: 20070021087
Abstract: DC power savings in a mobile communication device can be achieved by dynamically adjusting the biasing for a receiver based on the communication link quality. The output signal levels of at least one low noise amplifier (LNA) are monitored to identify the DC operating conditions for the LNA. Closed loop control of the DC biasing is adjusted based on a comparison between the monitored DC operating conditions and a reference signal. The output of the LNA is also coupled to a radio receiver section that is configured (e.g., SW or HW) to evaluate the link quality based on various criteria such as inter-modulation distortion, noise, interference, fading, etc. The reference signal that is used to control the DC biasing of the LNA is adjusted (periodically, continuously, or on demand) in response to the evaluated link quality. The dynamic biasing yields acceptable signal reception with low DC power consumption.

  • Publication number: 20060256140
Abstract: A system displays video to a user and has a display device with a field of pixels. It displays video to the user in the form of a series of discrete sequential frame images each made up of a first predetermined number of bit planes in which the pixels of the display are either off or have a color and intensity that is uniform over the field of pixels. The apparatus detects when a movement condition is present, such as rapid head movement or an object in the video crossing the display rapidly, in which condition the user's eye may tend to track across the display device at a rate at which perception of the video displayed may be reduced in quality, and it generates a condition-present signal when such a movement condition is detected. Responsive to generation of said condition-present signal, the apparatus causes the display device to display the frame images using fewer bit planes for each frame image than when said movement condition is not detected.
