  • Publication number: 20140290804
Abstract: To carry out a rotational casting method of preparing a silicon eutectic alloy composition, silicon and one or more metallic elements M are melted together to form a eutectic alloy melt comprising the silicon and the one or more metallic elements M. A mold containing the eutectic alloy melt is rotated about a longitudinal axis thereof at a speed sufficient to form a rotating volume of the eutectic alloy melt in contact with an inner surface of the mold. Heat is directionally removed from the rotating volume of the eutectic alloy melt to directionally solidify the eutectic alloy melt, and a eutectic alloy composition, which includes the silicon, the one or more metallic elements M, and a eutectic aggregation of a first phase comprising the silicon and a second phase of formula MSi2, where the second phase is a disilicide phase, is formed.

  • Publication number: 20140098913
Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for compensating I-Q imbalance in a wireless receiver. The receiver may employ a quadrature downconverter configured to receive an RF signal input and output an in-phase component and a quadrature component at an IF, an IF rotation block configured to downconvert the in-phase and quadrature components to baseband and an I-Q correction block configured to compensate for an I-Q imbalance in the received signal, wherein the I-Q correction block is positioned downstream from the IF rotation block in the signal path. Performing the I-Q correction after conversion to baseband may allow the compensation calculations to operate at a reduced digital rate. Similarly, digitally adjusting the gain of the signal prior to I-Q compensation may reduce the number of bits that are manipulated during the compensation process. These features may represent significant efficiencies as compared to I-Q corrections performed at IF.

  • Publication number: 20130310929
Abstract: Methods for the conditioning of bioprosthetic material employ bovine pericardial membrane. A laser directed at the fibrous surface of the membrane and moved relative thereto reduces the thickness of the membrane to a specific uniform thickness and smoothes the surface. The wavelength, power and pulse rate of the laser are selected which will smooth the fibrous surface as well as ablate the surface to the appropriate thickness. Alternatively, a dermatome is used to remove a layer of material from the fibrous surface of the membrane. Thinning may also employ compression. Stepwise compression with cross-linking to stabilize the membrane is used to avoid damaging the membrane through inelastic compression. Rather, the membrane is bound in the elastic compressed state through addition cross-linking. The foregoing several thinning techniques may be employed together to achieve strong thin membranes.
