  • Patent number: 10443343
Abstract: An extrusion ring is attached at a mandrel end to a gage ring as well as a softer ring that is disposed between the extrusion ring and the mandrel. The softer ring acts as an extrusion barrier along the mandrel. On setting the softer ring protects a free end of an extrusion ring from contact with the sealing element by extending axially at least as far as the extrusion ring and preferably further. The sealing element being softer than the adjacent softer ring allows the extrusion ring to push the softer ring out past the end of the extrusion ring and allows the softer ring to fill a void space adjacent the free end of the extrusion ring and to the sealing element. Relative motion between the rings at the attachment location is prevented.

  • Patent number: 10246971
Abstract: A valve assembly for a plug to close off a zone in the well for further treatment above the plug features a valve member initially pinned in an open position where flow up to a predetermined level can move through without dislodging the valve plug to move to its associated seat. If the perforating gun misfires a replacement gun can be run in with flow as the plug is still retained in the position for flow through the plug. On the other hand flow around the plug above a predetermined level will shear retainers for the plug and let the plug land on its seat closing flow in a downhole direction for treatment.

  • Patent number: 10145202
Abstract: A T-shaped slip is retained in an opening of a slip ring to drive the slip in opposed directions to and away from the surrounding borehole wall along a cone. The slip ring and cone do not come together when the slip is engaged. The opening allows release of a lock ring first with the slip engaged followed by release of the slip from the borehole wall. The slip ring and cone come together during removal from the borehole. A travel stop on the axial slip movement is provided to prevent guides on the slip from exiting a track or dovetail on the cone when the slip ring and cone are in contact during removal of the plug or packer. Extension of the guide from the cone track can happen if the slip moves through an enlarged portion of the borehole. The travel stop prevents this.

  • Publication number: 20180328135
Abstract: A dual bore packer features axially offset tapered thread connections so that the pressure rating and size of the connections in each of the bores can be as large as possible. This is enabled by providing as thick a wall as possible between the bores in the zone where the connecting tapered thread is placed.

  • Patent number: 10018010
Abstract: The frack plug has a sealing element that reforms when set to hold differential pressure. The element is granular with adhesive to hold the granular particles together but allow the shape to reform under setting force. The adhesive can be broken down with a chemical agent or in other ways to allow the seal to reform to the sealing position at the desired depth. As a result the structural components can disintegrate and the seal assembly can fragment into small pieces that can be circulated out of the well or allowed to drop to the hole bottom. The seal can have particles of controlled electrolytic materials (CEM), natural or synthetic sand, swelling or non-swelling rubber. The assembly can contain pellets that selectively release to initiate the breakdown of the structural components of the frack plug.

  • Patent number: 9835007
Abstract: Plug devices have an expander swage element, a rupturable slip element and a pusher sub. The pusher sub and slip element have a control protrusion and recess interface which guides segments of the ruptured slip element radially outwardly into engagement with a surrounding tubular. The slip element is formed of a degradable material.

  • Patent number: 9719319
Abstract: An annularly shaped structure serves as a support and seal when pushed out on a ramp. A continuous seal in a groove is used on one or two sides to enhance sealing. A separate annular structure for sealing can be disposed adjacent to the shape having alternating longitudinal slots so that each structure is targeted to a different purpose. The structures disintegrate when made of a disintegrating material such as for example a controlled electrolytic material (CEM) so that removal of the barrier can occur after a treating operation such as fracturing where many such barriers are deployed. The slots have enlarged holes at their ends to reduce stress concentration that can lead to cracking.

  • Patent number: 9605509
Abstract: A fully disintegrating plug has a passage therethrough and a ball seat at an upper end. The seal material that comprises plastic nuggets, sand and a grease binder is initially disposed behind a protective sleeve. A wireline setting tool creates relative movement between a plunger and a mandrel body that has a ramp surface adjacent the outlet of the protective sleeve. The sleeve outlet is closed for running in but plunger movement pushes the seal material so as to displace the closure at the sleeve outlet with the seal material that is forced up the mandrel ramp surface and against the surrounding tubular. After an object is landed on the mandrel seat and the treating is concluded, the plug components are caused to disintegrate or otherwise fail for complete removal. Multiple plugs are contemplated for fracturing or other treating applications.

  • Patent number: 9540899
Abstract: A method of forming a downhole seal between inner and outer tubulars. The method including bonding a sealing element to an insert with a bond that bonds at temperatures less than a first temperature and increasingly breaks down at temperatures higher than the first temperature. Defeating the bond between the sealing element and the insert at a second temperature higher than the first temperature; and, subsequently forming a seal between the inner and outer tubulars with the sealing element. Also included is a downhole sealing apparatus.

  • Publication number: 20160290092
Abstract: A compression set sealing element preferably 85A-95A TDI-Ester Polyurethane is compressed axially and retained against extrusion by CEM anti-extrusion rings. The compressed state of the sealing element is locked in by a degradable lock ring assembly. The mandrel is secured to an upper end of a slip cone and a breakable slip ring is secured by a wireline setting tool until the set position is reached. The slip ring breaks into segments that are pulled up the slip cone as the setting tool pushes on a sleeve to axially compress the sealing element and lock in the set. The sealing element is retained against extrusion by CEM anti-extrusion rings. When the setting tool is removed a ball seat is exposed for delivery of a ball to build pressure into the formation for fracturing. The entirety of the plug then disintegrates from well fluid exposure.

  • Patent number: 9447649
Abstract: A packer system including a packer and a setting mechanism. The setting mechanism has a setting piston that is actuatable in response to a fluid pressure in order to set the packer with the setting piston. The setting mechanism prevents actuation of the setting piston until the pressure is decreased below a threshold pressure from a value greater than the threshold pressure. A method of setting a packer is also included.
