Abstract: An online sales/automatic rebate and coupon redemption system provides online customers automatic retrieval and redemption of all applicable rebates and coupons during purchase. Purchase orders from customers are selectively fulfilled and products are shipped to the customers either by the system for online sales with automatic rebate and coupon redemption or by other merchant or manufacturer environments. The system purchases from merchants using applicable coupons and rebates and then sells the products to the customers, passing the savings to them. The system makes it possible to automatically retrieve coupons and rebates for items in a shopping cart during the activity of an online purchase at an electronic mall or an online merchant site. The system provides coupons to potential customers via email, based on customer profile, geographical information, etc. Manufacturers and merchants can update coupon value and content based on ongoing sales and volume of customer activity.

Abstract: A mixed storage device includes a set of storage units, each potentially based on a different storage technology, such as NAND flash drive, NOR flash drive, magnetic hard drive, magneto-optical drives, optical drives, etc. The mixed storage device comprises a host bus connector that is used to connect to a peripheral bus that facilitates communication to a processor of a device (such as a PC) and a controller. The controller manages a NAND flash storage device, a NOR flash storage device, an optical storage device, a hard drive and other storage components plugged into or integrated with the mixed storage device.

Abstract: Overlay to augment quality of currently playing media. The overlay operates to enhance the quality format of media so that it is output in a different quality format. As one example, when playing media content encoded in accordance with a standard definition television (SDTV) quality format, an appropriate overlay would operate to upgrade the quality format thereof to enhanced definition television (EDTV) quality format, high definition television (HDTV) quality format (or some other quality format). An appropriate overlay may also operate in accordance with audio content (e.g., upgrading a quality format of the audio content). With the advent of Blu-Ray discs (and other higher quality format discs), many individuals presently have libraries of media that are encoded with legacy/previous quality formats. An appropriate overlay that operates in conjunction with media encoded with a legacy/previous quality format allows the same content to be enjoyed in accordance with a newer/improved quality format.

Abstract: A stand alone low cost writing pad includes a rechargeable battery, a low capacity memory, a low power processor, a first pair of connectors and supports audio, video and digital ink capturing functionalities. The writing pad may be detached from and re-attached to a stand alone base unit using the first pair of connectors. The base unit includes another rechargeable battery, high capacity memory, high power processor, and a second pair of connectors. The base unit receives captured audio and digital ink from the writing pad via the communication pathway and the high power processor runs voice recognition and optical character recognition software on received data to generate second data. The second data is displayed on the writing pad and/or stored in the high capacity memory for future use.

Abstract: A system and method for encoding dynamic image information for an image generated by a computer application executing on a processor. Various aspects of the present invention may comprise determining a first set of information describing a reference image. A second set of information may be determined for describing an image, wherein the second set of information comprises information indicative of movement between the image and the reference image. For example, a set of primary movement directions may be determined based at least in part on the computer application generating the image. Such set of primary movement directions may be utilized for analyzing the image relative to the reference images. The difference between the image and the reference image may, for example, be analyzed using at least one of the set of primary movement directions. A movement direction may, for example, be utilized to describe the image.

Abstract: Video frames from a sequence of video frames and corresponding audio are received and processed by a media player. A first portion of the sequence depends on fewer reference frames then a second portion of the sequence. The number of reference frames per frame is limited. The first and second portions of the sequence are treated differently. The first portion is received at a lower data rate, with greater security and processed with a more robust protocol stack than the second portion. The first and second portions may be stored in a single queue and/or separate queues. The first portion of frame data is utilized to compensate for lost frames by repeating and/or interpolating video frames. The media player constructs a local video frame and synchronizes corresponding audio content with it. The received, repeated and/or interpolated video frames are assembled into display order and decoded.

Abstract: An Internet infrastructure is provided to transfer a packet of data between a client device and source device. The infrastructure consists of a support server that screens the packet for malware codes on behalf of a registered client. In order to scan for malware, the support server contains hardware and/or software modules to perform malware detection and quarantine functions. The modules identify malware bit sequence in the packet(s), malware bit sequences or entire contaminated code is quarantined or repaired as appropriate. After identification of malware code (if any), the support server sends warning messages to affected parties, providing information regarding the malware codes that were detected.

Abstract: A method for processing information in a wireless system including a host device, the host device including a wireless network processor, the method including receiving by the wireless network processor, at least one out-of-order frame. The wireless network processor may place data of the received at least one out-of-order frame in a memory, and may manage information relating to one or more holes resulting from the at least one out-of-order frame in a TCP receive window. The wireless network processor may set a programmable limit with respect to a number of holes allowed in the TCP receive window. The memory may include a local memory outside of the host device and/or a host memory within the host device.

Abstract: From a laptop and a client server interface, a subscriber securely initiates tracking and/or disabling of a communication device by a server. The subscriber receives location and/or usage reports for the communication device. The subscriber is provided with the capability to modify a profile, device status and/or transfer ownership of the device via a client server interface. Based on the profile, detection of a particular event triggers tracking and/or disabling of the device by the server. The communication device registers with the server utilizing its unique device ID and/or the subscriber identity information when accessing the internet. The server is enabled to communicate a status and/or a request for tracking information, to the communication device. The server is also enabled to receive tracking and/or location information and communicates it to the subscriber's laptop.

Abstract: A private access point may be utilized to establish a local network that is accessible by client devices when the client devices are communicatively coupled to the private access point. The private access point is then operable to determine services that may be provided in its local network to the client devices, and to advertise these services within its local network. The services comprise network and/or data accessibility, and bandwidth availability. Private access points are also operable to utilize local and/or remote resources to provide additional services, comprising audio/video processing capability, storage, and/or processing. Offering of services in private access point networks is incentivized to the private access points and/or to client devices. Incentives comprise offering pay and/or credit to the private access points.

Abstract: Methods are disclosed for indirectly monitoring and controlling at least one media peripheral device in a media exchange network by accessing a media management system (MMS) via a first media peripheral (MP) device (e.g., a TV screen) using a user control device (e.g., a remote control). An operation corresponding to a second media peripheral (MP) device (e.g., a digital camera) may be selected via the MMS using the first MP device and the user control device. The operation is then carried out (i.e., performed) by the second MP device. A status of the second MP device may be selected via the MMS using the first MP device and the user control device. The selected status is then displayed on the first MP device.

Abstract: A digital electronic device supports program transmission to a recipient device via the Internet. A frame adapter decodes incoming IP program packets and re-encodes resulting program signals adaptively to optimally suit the recipient device based upon configuration data of the recipient device. The frame adapter receives feedback from the recipient device, which may include a characterization of a communication path between the digital electronic device and the recipient device. The frame adapter utilizes the configuration information to generate the optimal video frame stream that is transmitted to the recipient device. The compression itself involves producing optimal number of base and predicted video frames.

Abstract: Searching of images by correlating a search image with a plurality of images hosted in Internet based servers by an image search server. The image search server supports delivery of search result pages to a client device based upon a search string or search image, and contains images from a plurality of Internet based web hosting servers. The image search server delivers a search result page containing images upon receiving a search string and/or search image from the web browser. The selection of images in the search result page is based upon: (i) word match, that is, by selecting images, titles of which correspond to the search string; and (ii) image correlation, that is, by selecting images, image characteristics of which correlates to that of search image. The selection of images in the search result page also occurs on the basis of popularity.

Abstract: A display system and method are provided that enable two-dimensional and/or three-dimensional images to be displayed. One or more light manipulating layers, a pixel array, and an optional backlighting panel are provided. Each light manipulating layer may be a parallax barrier or a lenticular lens. A parallax barrier includes a plurality of barrier elements arranged in a barrier element array. The barrier element array includes a plurality of strips of barrier elements selected to be transparent to form a plurality of non-blocking strips. A lenticular lens includes an array of sub-lenses, and may be elastic. The display system is configured to deliver light from the pixel array or backlighting panel as views to corresponding viewers in a viewing space. The delivered views may include one or more two-dimensional views and/or one or more three-dimensional views.

Abstract: An Internet infrastructure supports a timed window and version-based historical search service comprising a search server that receives a search string from a client device and a historical data repository from where the historical Internet data is retrieved when searching. A client device has a network browser that accesses a historical data support module that facilitates searching of historical data and displaying the historical Internet data to user. The network browser provides options for inputting a search string, accepting user search preferences, viewing timeline-based historical information, or viewing version-based historical search results. The network browser supports refinement of timeline searches with different historical version access, and vice versa.

Abstract: A search server searches web sites based upon a search string. Maxima categories are provided that sort search results based upon popularity and/or context similarity. A web browser displays the search result pages. A maxima determination module within the search server responds to the delivery of the initial search string by first categorizing search results applicability to the search string on the basis of maxima or by generating maxima categories with search results that correlated to the search string. Search results within each applicable maximum are then sorting on the basis of popularity within each of the maxima categories to effectuate popularity ranks for each search result or web page. User interaction with search results are monitored to better select search maxima and popularity ranks for subsequent search result requests for this search string, whereby the desirability of search results provided to the user improves over time.

Abstract: A communications device includes a PLC interface operable to couple at least two differing communication signals to at least two differing pairs of at least three conductors of a powerline medium. A processing module of the device and the PLC interface interact with a remote PLC device to determine connectivity of the remote PLC device to the PLC device via the at least three conductors of the powerline medium, select at least two conductor pairs of the powerline medium that communicatively couple the PLC device to the remote PLC device for Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) signal servicing, and simultaneously transmit MIMO PLC signals to the remote PLC device via the at least two conductor pairs. The communications device may also include a non-PLC interface, with the communications device operable to divide MIMO communications between a powerline medium and a non-PLC medium, e.g., coaxial cable, cat-5 cable.

Abstract: Aspects of the invention comprise a remote tracking and control server operable to transparently activate control of resources and to monitor operations on a target handheld communication device utilizing code installed on the handheld device. The resources may comprise a camera, microphone, GPS receiver, input device, display, speaker, wireless and/or wire-line transmitter and/or receiver. The monitoring and/or controlling activity is protected from interruption. The handheld device may be accessed by a securely stored unique identifier. Access to the controlling function and/or the resources by a user of the handheld device may be restricted. Monitored information is stored on the handheld device and communicated to the tracking server. The control server may receive monitored information from the handheld device whenever the device is coupled to a communication network. Monitoring may be initiated based on detected motion, sound, user input, video and/or touch.

Abstract: A system and method for utilizing multiple communication pathways for communication hand-off (e.g., in a MIMO system). Various aspects of the present invention may comprise an access point communicating with a communication system utilizing a first number of transceivers. After determining to perform a hand-off of the communication system to a second access point, simultaneously, a second number of communication system transceivers may be utilized to communicate with the first access point and a third number of communication system transceivers may be utilized to communicate with the second access point. Various aspects of the present invention may also comprise an access point initially communicating with a communication system utilizing a first number of transceivers. After determining to hand-off the communication system, the access point may communicate with the communication system utilizing a second number of transceivers that is different from the first number of transceivers.

Abstract: A Power Line Communications (PLC) device includes a processing module, memory, a Wireless Local Area Network interface (WLAN I/F), and a PLC communication interface (PLC I/F). When operating as a client device, the PLC device establishes communications with a premises communication device via the PLC I/F, requests WLAN service from the premises communication device via the PLC I/F, receives WLAN access credentials from the premises communication device via the PLC I/F, and accesses a WLAN via the WLAN I/F using the WLAN access credentials. The PLC device communicates with a client device via the PLC I/F, receives a WLAN service request from the client device via the PLC I/F, validates the client device for WLAN service, and transmits WLAN access credentials to the client device via the PLC I/F. The PLC device may also support backchannel operations such as financial transactions, key exchanges, encryption support, all via the PLC I/F.
