    Abstract: A method for sorting a particle of interest from a plurality of particles includes the steps of determining an absorption maxima of the particle of interest, providing a light source for generating a beam of coherent light at a wavelength correlating to the absorption maxima, providing a plurality of particles on a support surface, and imparting relative motion between the beam of coherent light and the plurality of particles so as to cause differential movement between the particle of interest and the plurality of particles. The particle of interest is then collected.

    Abstract: A resonant switching-type capacitive charging power conditioner circuit includes a trap switch assembly to prevent the energy initially delivered to the circuit by an electrical energy source, from returning to the source. Once trapped, all of the energy is transferred to a capacitive store over a number of cycles. The period for each cycle is a function of the state of charge of the capacitive store, and the period decreases for each successive cycle as the charge on the capacitive store increases to its final value. Switches are turned on and off in response to the absence of certain currents in the circuit, to match the decreasing period of each successive energy transfer cycle throughout the entire energy transfer process. This adaptive clocking prevents energy from returning to the energy source, and eliminates dead time for each cycle.

    Abstract: In a network and a method for evaluating medical data, a disposable biochip is provided which contains a patient sample with multiple biomolecular markers, as well as a biochip identifier which characterizes the biochip. The biochip is inserted into a point of care test device, which reads the biochip identifier. The point of care test device transmits the data characterizing the biochip to a remote server having access to a data bank in which a large number of measurement protocols are stored, and which selects one of the measurement protocols for testing the sample based on the transmitted data characterizing the biochip. The measurement protocol is transmitted back to the point of care test device via the data link, where the sample is tested using the measurement protocol. The test results are evaluated in an expert system, and a diagnostic result is displayed at the point of care test device.

The user connects to the portfolio management program (PMP) host computer through the Internet. The user reviews certain strategies and their historic performance. The information is transmitted across the Internet to the user. The information transmitted includes such information as historic performance, sample holdings, modeling how the particular strategy and its holding has performed in the past. The user, after making appropriate reviews, makes a decision to purchase the names of the stocks in that portfolio. The owner of the PMP host computer collects a payment for this service. Now the user sees a list of stocks provided by the PMP host computer. If the user can then make the decision whether to accept or reject any individual stock in the generated list.

    Abstract: We have performed separation of bacterial and cancer cells from peripheral human blood in microfabricated electronic chips by dielectrophoresis. The isolated cells were examined by staining the nuclei with fluorescent dye followed by laser induced fluorescence imaging. We have also released DNA and RNA from the isolated cells electronically and detected specific marker sequences by DNA amplification followed by electronic hybridization to immobilized capture probes. Efforts towards the construction of a “laboratory-on-a-chip” system are presented which involves the selection of DNA probes, dyes, reagents and prototyping of the fully integrated portable instrument.
