  • Patent number: 4290847
Abstract: Smooth-surfaced, free-flowing, rigid, spherical, hollow microcapsules having non-porous shell walls consisting of essentially homogeneous, non-vitreous metal oxide in predominantly polycrystalline state, which have at least one shell having over the entire outer surface thereof one or more coatings of material of the class consisting of ceramic oxide, metal or pyrocarbon, which contain for storage and transport within said shell or shells preselected gases, solids or liquids suitable for use in fusion targets are described together with methods for their production.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 10, 1975
Date of Patent: September 22, 1981
Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company
Inventors: James R. Johnson, William C. Flanagan, Jr.
  • Patent number: 4203852
Abstract: A wash cycle fabric softener, bleach and anti-cling composition compatible with organic detergents consisting essentially of a cationic softening agent, preferably a quaternary ammonium softener, and an inorganic peroxygen bleach compound in the weight ratio of 17:1 to 1:4 and preferably 10:1 to 1:1 of bleach:cationic.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 13, 1976
Date of Patent: May 20, 1980
    Assignee: Colgate-Palmolive Company
Inventors: James R. Johnson, William Chirash
  • Patent number: 4073318
Abstract: A process is provided for applying refractory wear-resistant interlocking tile to the inner surface of a circular to elliptical tubular casing and securing them in position by exertion of centripetal force from intumescence of an insulative sheet material between the tile and the casing exerting substantially uniform centrifugal and centripetal forces.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 19, 1976
Date of Patent: February 14, 1978
Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company
Inventors: James R. Close, James R. Johnson
  • Patent number: 4022660
Abstract: A nuclear fuel particle wherein a core, up to about 250 microns in diameter, of a normally solid fissionable material is completely encased in a shell having at least two concentric layers. A yielding of carbonaceous material about 5 to about 50 microns thick is disposed inward of a layer of substantially impermeable refractory material, e.g., pyrocarbon, up to about 100 microns thick. Examples of the yielding layer include carbonized synthetic polymer resins and sooty pyrocarbon.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 14, 1974
Date of Patent: May 10, 1977
    Assignee: General Atomic Company
Inventors: James R. Johnson, Harold G. Sowman
  • Patent number: 4012474
Abstract: Tiny spherules of boron carbide having a diameter in the range of about 10 microns to about 125 mils, with a smooth, substantially spherical outer surface formed from the molten state by surface tension forces, are made by melting irregular particles of boron carbide or boron compounds which react with carbon to form boron carbide in an isolating medium such as finely divided carbon or boron nitride.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 5, 1966
Date of Patent: March 15, 1977
    Assignee: General Atomic Company
Inventors: Harold G. Sowman, James R. Johnson
  • Patent number: 3961907
Abstract: Refractory catalyst supports are secured in metallic containers having different coefficients of thermal expansion by providing at least one layer of a resilient thermally resistant inorganic sheet material or paper between the support and casing and securing the paper and catalyst support in the container by foaming an inorganic material in the space between the sheet material or paper and catalyst support. A further layer of sheet material or paper may be provided adjacent the support with the foam between the separate layers of sheet material.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 8, 1972
Date of Patent: June 8, 1976
Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company
Inventors: James R. Close, William P. Wood, Robert A. Hatch, James R. Johnson
