  • Patent number: 6778501
Abstract: In a wireline or wireless telecommunications system or data network, which employs a Selective Repeat Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) to convey data packet reception status for a sequence of data packets grouped together into a number of blocks of data packets, partial bit mapping is employed to improve efficiency, particularly with respect to bandwidth. This may be accomplished, more specifically, by including in the ARQ message that is sent from the receiver to the sender, a number of partial bitmaps, along with a corresponding number of bitmap block numbers, where a first bitmap block number identifies a particular one of the blocks of data packets and the corresponding bitmap defines the reception status of the data packets in that block. Each of the remaining bitmap block numbers identify an additional block of data packets relative to the first block of data packets. Accordingly, the remaining bitmap block numbers require fewer bits to identify their corresponding data packet blocks.

  • Publication number: 20040132442
Abstract: In a packet transmission system, especially wireless transmission system, where data is transmitted in packets at different error protection levels and where the error protection level of one packet (=the succeeding packet) may differ from the error protection level of a preceding packet without providing code termination between the said preceding and the said succeeding packet the performance may degrade in case a different error protection level is used by the preceding packet and the succeeding packet. The invention proposes in these cases to insert a supplementary packet between the preceding and the succeeding packet whereby the error protection level of the supplementary packet is higher than the lowest error protection level that is used either by the preceding or the succeeding packet.

  • Patent number: 6665307
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and system for reducing the delay of the transmission of packet data including receiving data from a network via a base station and assigning a mobile station to a packet channel having an active mode and a variable fast page mode. Packet data is exchanged in the active mode until a first inactivity timer expires. The base station and mobile station are then switched to a variable fast page mode in which additional packet data can be exchanged, wherein the variable fast page mode has a greater delay between transmission opportunities than the active mode. The variable fast page mode schedules specific time slots which are monitored for the transmission and receipt of successive packets. In addition, the periodicity of future time slots can vary based on the delay between the successive packets.

  • Patent number: 6622251
Abstract: In a WLAN where an AP and MTs use a duplex airlink having a MAC frame structure to communicate with each other, the AP places wakeup PDUs at different locations in a MAC frame to allow the MTs to conserve energy by maximizing sleep time. In other embodiments, the wakeup PDUs are sequenced by MAC-ID so that a MT can conclusively determine whether remaining wakeup PDUs in a sequence can contain its MAC-ID, and go to sleep early if they cannot. In another embodiment, a wakeup PDU type can indicate to a corresponding MT whether the MT can expect downlink data later in the same MAC frame. In addition, the wakeup PDU type can indicate to the MT that the MAC frame that it should awaken and remain awake to receive downlink data in the future.

  • Publication number: 20030050068
Abstract: A central controller (CC) [22] of a wireless local area network (LAN) [20], in conjunction with an association operation with a mobile terminal [24] and upon receiving from the mobile terminal (MT) a first control signal [CS 1 ] of a sequence of control signals involved in the association operation, pre-reserves a MAC resource for transmission of at least a further control signal in the sequence. The MAC resource for the further control signal is pre-reserved prior to information for the further control signal being stored in a transmission buffer [58] of the mobile terminal. In essence, judging from the nature of the first control signal, the central controller (CC) anticipates eventuality of the further control signal and pre-reserves the MAC resource for the further control signal. The central controller (CC) pre-reserves the MAC resource to avoid transmission of a separate message to request a MAC resource for the further control signal.

  • Patent number: 6519469
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and system for reducing the delay of the transmission of packet data including storing, by a base station, data associated with a mobile station from a first packet data transaction. A packet for starting a second packet data transaction is received from a mobile station and the base station determines whether or not the packet has been correctly received. The base station correlates at least one field in the packet with the stored data. If the base station is able to identify the mobile station based on the correlation with the stored data, then the base station reserves a resource for transmission of a subsequent packet from the mobile station regardless of whether or not the packet has been correctly received.

  • Patent number: 6452940
Abstract: The present invention describes a method of migrating a mobile station, operating within an integrated D-AMPS/EDGE wireless telecommunication network, from the D-AMPS packet portion of the network to the EDGE/GPRS packet portion of the network. The technique includes accessing the control channels of both the D-AMPS and EDGE networks in order to obtain the necessary timing advance and packet transfer identifier for use with the GPRS packet system. In an embodiment of the invention, the MS makes a first access on a D-AMPS control channel to obtain a pointer to a reserved radio block on an EDGE packet control channel. The MS makes a second access on the EDGE control channel as specified by the reserved radio block which contains a particular frequency and timeslot location. The MS then sends a series of shortened bursts to the network such that a Timing Advance Index (TAI) value is calculated from the bursts and sent back to the MS.
