  • Publication number: 20060047318
Abstract: A drug delivery system uses an electrically sensitive polymer to store a drug and applies an electric field onto the electrically sensitive polymer for quantitatively and temporally controlled drug delivery. In one embodiment, the drug delivery system is part of a cardiac rhythm management (CRM) system that includes an implantable CRM device and an implantable drug delivery device. The implantable CRM device delivers electrical therapies to a heart and controls the implantable drug delivery device by producing the electrical field with controllable amplitude, frequency, and timing.

  • Publication number: 20060008500
Abstract: All or a portion of a surface of an implantable sensor is covered with a biocompatible coating formed at least partially of a biomaterial matrix having properties that promote a substantially even growth of tissue cells over the surface of the coating. Additional materials, such as growth factors, agents that recruit endogenous stem cells, and cell adhesion motif arginine, glycine, aspartic acid may be included in the coating. Autologous cells may be added to the coating prior to implantation. The sensor surface may also be textured, by etching or abrading, in order to promote even tissue growth. Alternatively, the sensor surface may be covered with a coating having properties that inhibit the growth of tissue. These coatings may include a biomaterial, a biomaterial matrix having a drug, such as a sirolimus or a steroid, an active component, or a self assembled monolayer.

  • Publication number: 20050043675
Abstract: A drug delivery system detects a cardiac condition indicative of a need for increasing a cardiac metabolic level and, in response, releases a drug into tissue or blood to shift a source of metabolically synthesized energy fueling cardiac contraction from fatty acid to glucose. One example of such a system includes an implantable device detecting an ischemia and a transdermal drug delivery device delivering a drug when an ischemic condition is detected. Another example of such a system includes one or more implantable devices detecting a predefined change in cardiac metabolic level and delivering a drug when the change is detected. • Publication number: 20040071471
Abstract: A method and system for pairing a remote control transmitter and receiver includes associating an identification (ID) code with the transmitter. The transmitter includes a light generator for generating a light signal in order to perform a primary function which is visually detectable by a human operator. The light generator may be a laser pointer or a status indicator LED. The light generator is modulated to encode the identification code onto the light signal while the light generator is performing the primary function. The receiver includes a light signal detector such as an LED for receiving the light signal from the light generator. The receiver associates itself with the ID code contained in the light signal in order to pair the receiver with the transmitter. By being paired with the transmitter, the receiver acts upon transmitted command signals received from the transmitter.

  • Patent number: 6721701
Abstract: A sound discriminator (107, 207) in accordance with the invention distinguishes or emphasis a specific audio signal or class or audio signals. The sound discriminator is employed in a digital audio encoding and/or decoding process. A comparator (110, 210) within the sound discriminator compares a received representation of an audio signal with a stored representation (112, 212) of a desired signal. An error between the two signals is determined and if the error is within an acceptable range, the stored representation of the desired signal replaces the actual received representation of the audio signal in an encoded or decoded stream of data. In this manner, a desired signal within an encoded or decoded signal is discriminated.

  • Patent number: 6658255
Abstract: Apparatus and a method for establishing a cellular mobile call. If no radio traffic (voice or data) channels are available for a calling or called mobile station (MS), then a test is made to determine the expected wait time before a channel becomes available. If the expected wait time is less than a first threshold, then the call or the call request is queued. If a channel for an incoming call to an MS does not become available before a second time threshold, then the caller is notified by an announcement that the call has been queued and is expected to be established in a short time. If the caller of an incoming call to the MS does not disconnect, then the MSC waits for an available channel and establishes a connection to the MS over that available channel. For an outgoing call from an MS, a control message is sent to the MS to trigger an indication of the queued status to the user. The indication may be one or more tones, a data display, or the playing of a pre-recorded announcement.

  • Patent number: 6513128
Abstract: The present invention allows NIC resources to be accessed through auxiliary power and an ASIC clock while the PC is powered down and while PCI power and the PCI clock are not available. The present invention also provides an alternate path for accessing the NIC registers, downloading keep-alive and alert-on-LAN packets to the transmit packet buffer (TPB), as well as uploading received packets from the receive packet buffer (RPB). The present invention also allows monitoring PCI activity and seamlessly servicing the PCI configuration cycle (when PCI power and the PCI clock are restored) in conjunction with responding to the access through the alternate path (while PCI power and the PCI clock are not available).

  • Publication number: 20020193119
Abstract: Apparatus and a method for establishing a cellular mobile call. If no radio traffic (voice or data) channels are available for a calling Mobile Station (MS), then a test is made to determine the expected wait time before a channel becomes available. If the expected wait time is less than a first threshold, then the call request is queued. If a channel does not become available before a second time threshold, then the caller is notified that the call has been queued and is expected to be established in a short time. A control message is sent to the MS to trigger an indication of the queued status to the user. The indication may be one or more tones, a data display, or the playing of a pre-recorded announcement. If the expected wait time is more than the first threshold, the caller is given the opportunity to be called back when a radio channel becomes available. Advantageously, the number of failed calls because of unavailable traffic channels is reduced, and the caller's annoyance level is reduced.

  • Publication number: 20020193117
Abstract: A method and apparatus for establishing a wireless telephone connection when a call cannot be made immediately. The caller and the wireless system negotiate for a later time when another attempt will be made to establish the call. Shortly before that time arrives, the wireless system reserves a radio channel and retains that channel for the deferred call. Then, the system calls the customer back, or waits for the customer to attempt the call. A reserved channel is then used for the call if the system has been successful in reserving such a channel. Advantageously, there is a high probability that the deferred call will have a radio channel available.

  • Publication number: 20020193120
Abstract: A method and apparatus for permitting a wireless telecommunications caller to use an alternate service provider if the primary service provider has no available bearer channels. If the primary service provider has no available bearer channels for a call, that service provider sends a message to the caller's mobile station to switch its control channel to one of the control channels of an alternate service provider. The caller then attempts to complete the call over the facilities of the alternate service provider. Advantageously, spare facilities of the alternate service provider can be employed to good use; advantageously, the caller's service is improved because the call is not finally blocked when no bearer channels are available for the call.

  • Publication number: 20020107000
Abstract: In a cellular mobile telecommunications system, apparatus and a method for altering the charge for a call if the occupancy of radio channels is above or below an appropriate threshold. For one proposed service, the users are charged less if they make calls during the time when the occupancy of radio channels is less than a threshold. For users having another proposed service, the charge is greater when the occupancy of the radio channels is above another threshold. Advantageously, users are encouraged to use the mobile telecommunications service when the occupancy of regular channels is low, and to use the service less when the occupancy of the radio channels is high.
