  • Patent number: 9631923
Abstract: A system for measuring strain includes an optical fiber having a central portion secured between two fixed points. A first light source outputs light at a first frequency and a second light source outputs light at a second different frequency. The two light sources are both coupled to a first end of the optical fiber. A back scatter detector is also coupled to the first end to receive a return light signal from the optical fiber and outputs a signal based thereon. A forward scatter detector is coupled to a second end of the optical fiber to receive a forward light signal from the optical fiber and outputs a signal based thereon. A processor receives the signals from the back scatter detector and the forward scatter detector and generates an output signal proportional to the strain between the two fixed points based on the received signals.

  • Publication number: 20170015440
Abstract: Methods and an apparatus for processing fuselage sections. Measurements of a first fuselage section are generated using a scanning system. The scanning system includes a first scanner and a second scanner. The first scanner generates measurements of a first portion of the first fuselage section and the second scanner generates measurements of a second portion of the first fuselage section. The first fuselage section is held in a cradle system. The measurements of the first portion of the first fuselage section are combined with the measurements of the second portion of the first fuselage section to generate an ensemble of measurements of the first fuselage section. Using the cradle system, one or more of the first fuselage section or a second fuselage section are shaped based on the ensemble of measurements. Using the cradle system, the first fuselage section is joined with the second fuselage section.

  • Patent number: 9534969
Abstract: A system and method for tactile sensing using thin film optical sensing networks is disclosed. A sensing network includes an array of optical pathways arranged in a flexible material. Each optical pathway has an input at a first end and an output at a second end. A light source is coupled to the input of each respective associated optical pathway. Each light source directs a light signal having a first predetermined frequency and characteristic into the associated optical pathway. A light detector is coupled to the output of each respective associated optical pathway. Each light detector receives a light signal from the associated optical pathway and generates an output signal corresponding to the magnitude of the received light signal at a second predetermined frequency. A processor receives the output signals from each light detector and determines an amount of pressure applied to the sensing network based on the received signals.

  • Patent number: 9490975
Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for information assurance for networked systems. The system and method involve a quantum key distribution (QKD) source, a gimbaling device, a receiver, and a sender. The QKD source is mounted on the gimbaling device, and the QKD source propagates energy into an oversized spot beam. The receiver and the sender are within optical communication of each other. The gimbaling device performs pointing acquisition tracking only as necessary to keep the receiver located within the oversized spot beam. When the receiver is located within the oversized spot beam, the QKD source performs a QKD function. In one or more embodiments, the gimbaling device is mounted on a mobile platform. In some embodiments, the mobile platform is mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). In other embodiments, the mobile platform is mounted on a small ground vehicle.

  • Patent number: 9453720
Abstract: A method and apparatus for processing fuselage sections. A scanning system is positioned between a first fuselage section held in a first cradle and a second fuselage section held in a second cradle. A group of beams of light is transmitted from the scanning system to targets on a first interior surface of the first fuselage section and a second interior surface of the second fuselage section. A reflected light is detected from a beam of light. Measurements of the first fuselage section and the second fuselage section are generated from using the reflected light generated in response to the beam of light. The measurements enable shaping at least one of the first fuselage section and the second fuselage section for joining the first fuselage section to the second fuselage section.
